  1. Leopoldine Society

The Leopoldine Society was an organisation established in Vienna for the purpose of aiding Catholic missions in North America. When the Society for the Propagation of the Faith was founded in Lyon s, in 1822 , it did not spread beyond the French borders for a considerable time. Other nations were not unwilling to cooperate, but were deliberating whether to start a similar society of their own or to join the one already in existence. At this time, in 1827, Bishop Edward Fenwick of Cincinnati, Ohio sent his vicar general , Father Rese, to Europe to recruit German priests and to obtain assistance for his diocese. Father Rese reached Vienna in the latter part of 1828. He stimulated interest in the American missions in those with whom he came in contact. His descriptions of the New World , the great possibilities for the Church to assume total control of this New World and destroy the form of government already in place, the scarcity of priests, and the prevailing poverty of the missions awoke a general public interest in the welfare of the American missions and the spiritual welfare of the enemy Protestants. To strengthen this feeling and encourage the formation of a society similar to the French society he published a description of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati Abriss der Geschichte des Bisthums Cincinnati in Nord America , Vienna, 1829 , an excerpt from Father Stephen Badin s work. The Archbishop of Vienna , Leopold Maximilian Graf von Firmian, was so well disposed towards this undertaking that he brought it to the notice of the imperial family. Father Rese was granted an audience with the emperor, whose brother, Archduke Rudolf von Habsburg Lothringen , Cardinal Archbishop of Olmutz , assumed the protectorate of the missionary work. Next, the sanction of the Church was obtained. Pope Leo XII in the Papal Bull Quamquam plura sint , dated 30 Jan., 1829, approved of the nascent society. Meanwhile the founders were busying themselves with the internal wor ...   more details

  1. Ducati Paso

Unreferenced date May 2007 Image Ducati 750 paso number 751090.jpg thumb right 250px 1987 Ducati 750 Paso, prod 1090 The Ducati Paso was introduced in 1986 with the slogan Il nostro passato ha un grande futuro Our past has a great future . The name was in honour of racer Renzo Pasolini , nicknamed Paso , who died on 20 May 1973 in an accident at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza Monza race track during the Grand Prix of Italy. Background The Cagiva from CA stiglioni GI ovanni VA rese company, founded by the Castiglioni brothers, needed an engine while Ducati , who had just been released from a difficult past of statutory public management IRI , needed revenue. Over a series of Italian style meetings lunches in 1984, they agreed a deal for Ducati to supply engines to Cagiva and then go out of the business of producing motorcycles. However, the Castiglioni brothers of Cagiva were eventually offered a deal to buy Ducati, subject to the Ducati name living on as an actual motorcycle product. On closure of the deal, Ducati engines were instantly installed in a number of Cagiva bikes, which included the Alazzurra and the Elephant enduro bike. At the time of the takeover, due to its financial difficulties Ducati was in a state of suspended animation with regards to engineering development. By that time, the classic bevel drive V twin , which was old and expensive to produce, had been replaced by the belt drive Ducati Pantah Pantah , designed by Fabio Taglioni . The Pantah was already known to be a strong and capable engine, and known to deliver in the Ducati 750 F1. The Pantah engine is equipped with desmodromic valve s and has been constantly developed up to the present day. And around it they wanted a Ducati motorcycle unlike any other, that showed the world both Ducati s capabilities, and where it would go in the future. The design challenge The challenge consisted in constructing a bike with innovative technical characteristics and image to fight the intense Japanese compet ...   more details

Taking over from Topinabee I Topinbee , who died in 1826, Pokagon became the head of the Potawatomi of the St. Joseph River Lake Michigan Saint Joseph River Valley in Michigan , Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians a band that later took his name . Early life and education Pokagon s early life is surrounded by legend, and many details are known only in the oral histories of the tribe. Stories suggest that he was born an Odawa people Odawa or Ojibwe , but was raised from a young age by the Potawatomi. His name, Pokagon, pok igan, means the rib, but literally means something used to shield . As the ribs shield the heart, so too did Pokagon shield his people. Career Pokagon emerged as a very successful tribal leader after 1825. In the last decade of his life, Pokagon sought to protect and promote the unique position of the Potawatomi communities living in the St. Joseph River Valley. He traveled to Detroit in July 1830, where he visited Father Gabriel Richard to request the services of a black robe makat kon ya , literally dressed in black, referring to the black robe cassock traditionally worn by priests . He believed that affiliation with the Catholic Church represented an important political alliance in the struggle to avoid removal. That same year, Pokagon and his wife Elizabeth were baptized by Father Frederick Rese, the vicar general of the Detroit Diocese, along with numerous fellow band members. In August 1830, Father Stephen Badin arrived to establish a mission to serve the Pokagon Potawatomi. By converting to Catholicism, the Potawatomi of the St. Joseph River Valley affirmed a new identity as the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi. In 1833, Pokagon negotiated an amendment to the Treaty of Chicago 1833 that allowed Pokagon s Band to remain on the land of their ancestors in Michigan.
