The Representation of the PeopleAct 1985 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom concerning British electoral law. The Act allows British citizens who are resident outside the United Kingdom to qualify as overseas electors in the United Kingdom constituencies constituency for which they were last registered for a period of five years after they have left this was subsequently changed to 20 years and is now 15 years . Expatriate electors were able to register as overseas electors at British consular posts, starting in the summer of 1986. When registered, expatriate voters were eligible to vote by Proxy voting proxy at any Elections in the United Kingdom Parliamentary or European Parliament elections which were held after the 1987 register came into force on 16 February, 1987. Apartheid legislation in South Africa The Separate Representation of Voters Act No. 46 was introduced in South Africa on 18 June 1951. Part of the legislation during the apartheid era, the National Party South Africa National Party introduced it to enforce racial segregation, and was the start of a deliberate process to remove all non white people from the voters roll. This act was declared invalid by the Supreme court Supreme Court when challenged in the case of Harris v Minister of the Interior 1952 2 SA 428 AD . The government, however, was able to circumvent this decision by increasing the number of Appellate Division judges from five to eleven, and increasing the size of the Senate from forty eight to forty nine. These changes enabled the government to successfully introduce the South Africa Act Amendment Act No 9 of 2 March 1956, effectively overturning the Supreme Court s decision and revalidating the act. The European Parliament RepresentationAct 2003 c.7 is an Act of Parliament Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom . The long title is An Act to make provision enabling alterations to be made to the total number of Members of the European Parliament to be elected for the United Kingdom and to their distribution between the electoral regions to make provision for and in connection with the establishment of an electoral region including Gibraltar for the purposes of European Parliamentary elections and for connected purposes. The Act made provision for a reduction in the number of Members of the European Parliament who represent the United Kingdom see Treaty of Nice . Gibraltar was enfranchised by adding it to the South West England constituency after taking the British Government to the European Court of Justice . The original cheeky title had to be adapted and the full title became A Bill to create offences in relation to the publication of false or misleading statements by elected representatives and for connected purposes . The content was, however, left largely intact. The People s Local Government Act was a Sudan ese legislation. It was passed in 1971, under the Jaafar Nimeri regime. The law formally abolished the system of local government and judiciary based upon traditional chiefs and sheikhs inherited from the colonial period the system the British colonialists had dubbed the Native Administration . Under this legislation local councils were formed, linked to the Sudanese Socialist Union party of Nimeri.
