  1. Giovanni Cavazzi da Montecuccolo

Giovanni Antonio Cavazzi da Montecuccolo 1621 1678 was an Italy Italian Order of Friars Minor Capuchin Capuchin missionary noted for his travels in 17th century Angola then a Portugal Portuguese colony and his lengthy account of local history and culture as well as a history of the Capuchin mission there. Cavazzi was an indifferent student and was almost denied a position in the central Africa n mission, but eventually prevailed thanks to his piety. He arrived in Luanda in 1654 and was dispatched to the Portuguese Empire Portuguese possessions in the eastern end of the colony. He traveled widely as a chaplain with the Portuguese Army including a stay at the court of the king of Pungo Andongo , a trip with them, in 1659 into the central highlands region, a visit in 1660 to the court of Queen Nzinga or Njinga in Matamba and the Kingdom of Kongo . ref For details of his visit, and the sources he used to rewrite his work on Kongo in later editions of Istorica Descrizioni see John Thornton, New Light on Cavazzi s Seventeenth Century Description of Kongo, History in Africa 6 1979 253 4. ref He returned to Njinga s court in 1662 and remained there after the queen s death in 1663. He presided at her funeral and left Matamba in 1665, returning to Italy in 1667. He was assigned the task of writing a history of the Capuchin Mission Christian mission , perhaps because since 1662 or so he had been writing his own history. He worked in the archives in Italy to round out his history, but The Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples Holy Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith , which had commissioned the work was reluctant to publish it, and in fact it was not published until 1687, after Cavazzi s death. In 1673 he returned to Angola as prefect of the Capuchin mission. He returned to Italy in 1677 where he wrote a second biographical account of the Capuchin mission, which was not published until the twentieth century. He died on July 18, 1678. ref Biographical details ...   more details

  1. John Thomas Blackburn

John Thomas Tommy Blackburn 1913 March 21, 1994 was best known for his leadership role in World War II as first commanding officer of the famed F4U Corsair squadron that went by name of VF 61 The Jolly Rogers . Biography Born and raised in Washington D.C. to the son of a naval officer, he graduated from Duke Ellington School of the Arts Western High School . Early career Blackburn graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1933 and after becoming a Naval Aviator found himself as a flight instructor in 1941 when the United States entered World War II. First squadron command Lieutenant Commander Blackburn was anxious to get into a combat unit, but was relegated to flying the F2A Buffalo at Opa locka, Florida near Miami . After several requests for combat assignment, he received orders in July 1942 to organize VGF 29 as commanding officer and report aboard the new escort carrier USS Santee CVE 29 6 . VGF 29 was equipped with the F4F F4F 4 Wildcat . Blackburn assembled a ready room of mainly brand new ensigns fresh from winning their wings at advanced flying school at Corpus Christi. Luckily he had the assistance of a combat veteran from the recent Battle of the Coral Sea , Lt. jg Harry Brink Bass who received the Navy Cross for his attack on the ship Japanese aircraft carrier Sh h . Blackburn set up operations at a remote field at Pungo well away from the brass and traffic at NAS Norfolk and was soon promoted to Lieutenant Commander. They have now disappeared as a separate tribe. They spoke an Algonquian language and historically occupied a coastal area of northeastern North Carolina . History Indigenous peoples of varying cultures lived along the waterways throughout the South. Over time they gave rise to the historical tribes known at the time of European encounter. Other peoples migrated into the area as well. The early 20th century ethnographer Frank Speck believed that the historical Machapunga and other Algonquian tribes in North Carolina had probably been earlier connected to the larger population based in Virginia. He believed the tribes in North Carolina were part of an early and large Algonquian migration in a southerly direction in historical times. He noted the presence of Algonquian speaking tribes on the Northeast coast and in central Canada. ref name Speck http homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com jmack algonqin speck.htm Frank G.
