  1. Andre Lafosse

Andr Lafosse 1890 1975 was a professional trombone trombonist and professor at the Paris Conservatoire in the early 20th century. Lafosse was Professor of Trombone at the Paris Conservatoire from 1948 to 1960, where he took over from Henri Couillaud . He wrote a book entitled M thode compl te pour le trombone in three volumes published in 1921 first two volumes and 1946 third volume . In it he famously describes the practise of playing with vibrato as vulgar and glissandos of questionable taste . It should be also be apparent that the French trombones of the period could not play the fifth partial D in tune in the closed slide position 1st so 4th position is used more frequently. There is are just three pages of an appendix to cover the bass trombone. He also composed a piece for brass quintet with drums, entitled Suite Breve . The Suite Br ve is available on ind sens Records France on physical CD 2008 as well as downloading on http www.indesens.fr index.php?art 3&th 56 In the 1920s and 30s he recorded in orchestras with Stravinsky . It has been suggested that he was the soloist in Stravinsky s own 1928 Paris recording of Pulcinella ballet Pulcinella where the trombonist omits the written glissandos instead playing the notes staccato. The Octet for Winds Stravinsky Octet for winds recorded in the same period features trombonists Andr Lafosse and Rapha l Delbos . References Herbert, Trevor The Trombone, Yale University Press, 2006. 1. Picasso and the Ballets Russes

Orphan date February 2009 Pablo Picasso s first collaboration with the Ballets Russes was Parade ballet Parade . In a letter sent to a friend, Jean Cocteau the librettist said Picasso amazes me every day, to live near him is a lesson in nobility and hard work ref Rothschild 49 ref . Picasso s studio in Rome had a little crate that held the model of Parade with its trees and houses, and on a table were the painted characters the Chinaman, Managers, American girl, and horse. Cocteau described his friend s unusual artistic process A badly drawn figure of Picasso is the result of endless well drawn figures he erases, corrects, covers over, and which serves him as a foundation. In opposition to all schools he seems to end his work with a sketch. The audiences were amazed by the first ballet to have cubist costumes, sets, and choreography. After World War I, Picasso made a number of important relationships with figures associated with Serge Diaghilev s Ballets Russes. In the summer of 1918, Picasso married Olga Khokhlova , a ballerina with the troupe, for whom Picasso was designing the ballet, Parade ballet Parade , in Rome and they spent their honeymoon in the villa near Biarritz of the glamorous Chilean art patron Eugenia Err zuriz . During the same period that Picasso collaborated with Diaghilev s troup, he and Igor Stravinsky collaborated on Pulcinella ballet Pulcinella in 1920. References reflist Rothschild, Deborah Menaker.
