JPG also serves other United States Department of Defense Department of Defense organizations as well as private contractors assigned. History On October 8, 1940, the Chief of Ordnance acknowledged a need for the construction of an additional proving ground to carry out simultaneously and without interruption the many activities relative to proof work of the ordnance manufacturing program. In December 1940, the site acquisition committee decided on a 56,000 acre 230  km tract of land in southern Indiana because of its proximity to surrounding industrial and land availability. Construction began immediately, and the first round was fired at U.S. Army JPG on May 10, 1941. In April 1953, JPG reached a pinnacle of employment and activity, with 1,774 employees and a production of 175,000 rounds fired monthly. Base closure In 1989, JPG was identified for base closure under the base realignment and closure BRAC and closed on September 30, 1995. Since that time, the Army has maintained a small on site oversight staff and an off site environmental coordinator. 1. German Village (Dugway proving ground)

No footnotes date June 2011 German Village was the nickname for a range of residential houses constructed in 1943 by the U.S. Army in the Dugway Proving Ground in Utah , roughly a hundred kilometers southwest of Salt Lake City . Dugway was a high security testing facility for chemical and biological weapons. The purpose of the replicas of German homes, which were repeatedly rebuilt after being intentionally burned down, was to perfect tactics in the fire bombing of German residential areas during World War II . The US Army employed German emigr architects such as Erich Mendelsohn to create copies as accurate as possible of the dwellings of densely populated poorer population quarters of Berlin. The main goal was to find a tactic to achieve a fire storm in the city center. Ironically the working class areas on which the test buildings were based, such as Wedding Berlin Wedding and Pankow , had been Communist Party of Germany communist strongholds before Nazi repression suppressed dissent. The architects who worked on the German village and on the Japanese equivalent also included Konrad Wachsmann and Antonin Raymond . Operational from 1965, from 1970 the track was further extended, so that by 2008 there were convert 80 km mi of varying surfaces. Besides test track there are also environmental chambers, freshwater and saltwater pools.
