The Synod of Pistoia was a diocesan synod held in 1786 under the presidency of Scipione de Ricci 1741 1810 , bishop of Pistoia , and the patronage of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold, grand duke of Tuscany , with a view to preparing the ground for a national council and a reform of the Tuscany Tuscan Church. Circular letter On January 26 the grand duke issued a circular letter to the Tuscan bishops suggesting certain reforms, especially in the matter of the restoration of the authority of diocesan synods, the purging of the missals and breviaries of legends, the assertion of episcopal as against papal authority, the curtailing of the privileges of the monastic orders, and the better education of the clergy. In spite of the hostile attitude of the great majority of the bishops, Bishop de Ricci issued on July 31 a summons to a diocesan synod, which was solemnly opened on the September 18. It was attended by 233 beneficed secular and 13 regular priests, and decided with practical unanimity on a series of decrees which, had it been possible to carry them into effect, would have involved a drastic alteration of the Church on the Febronianism lines advocated by Febronius . It is dedicated to St. Andrew the Apostle , and includes the famous Pulpit of St. Andrew by Giovanni Pisano . The church probably dates from as early as the 8th century, though in a smaller size. In the 12th century it was extended in length. The fa ade shows the typical bichrome marble decoration of the Pistoiese Romanesque architecture Romanesque style, executed in the mid 12th century by Gruamonte and his brother Adeodatus, who was also responsible for the sculptures and for the portal s architrave . The latter depicts the Voyage of the Magi , a rare theme whose use here derives from the fact that the church was located on the Via Francigena , by which, in the Middle Ages, the pilgrims reached Rome from France . The decorated capitals are by a Master Henry, while the small statue of St. Andrew in the lunette over the portal is reminiscent of Giovanni Pisano s style. In the late 15th century the upper fa ade was finished and the central nave was vaulted. The frescoes in the apse date to 1506, executed by Bernardino del Signoraccio. Today only the central part, with the Father supported by Four Angels , survives. The church probably dates to Lombards Lombard times. It was enlarged in 1086 and again in 1124, receiving its current appearance in 1263. The central portal s architrave is attributed to the workshop of Guido da Como , and depicts a Jesus Giving the Keys to St. Peter, with the Virgin and the Apostles . Paolo Lanfranchi da Pistoia or Pistoja lang oc Paulo Ianfranchi de Pistoia fl. 1282&ndash 1295 was a noted Italian people Italian poet who wrote in both the Italian language Italian and Occitan languages. He is thus sometimes described as a troubadour . A native of Pistoia he was a major cultural figure of the Duecento there his sonnet s have been praised for their originality. Biography Paolo is first encountered in the records in Bologna in 1282. ref name bertoni118 Bertoni, 118. ref He was present for an act granted in favour of Pistoia on 1 February that year. He also testified alongside Forisio di Jacopo in a document of 13 October, and was still at Bologna on 21 January 1283, when he witnessed a mutuum contracted between two men of Pistoia, Gerardino Bruno and Pucino Pepi. In 1291 he was back in Pistoia, where he was sentenced as guilty for the crime of striking cum una spada malvagia vetita pro forma statutorum with a sword in malice a certain Orellio Megliori on the head, ex dicta percussione multus sanguis extivit from which wound exited much blood . ref name bertoni118 He was sent into exile and was in Bologna again in 1295. It is therefore certain that if, as some historians have believed, Paolo spent some time at the court of Crown of Aragon Aragon in Spain , it must have been spent between 1283 and 1291, most probably 1283&ndash 1285 if at all. ref name bertoni119 Bertoni, 119. ref Italian poetry Paolo wrote seven surviving sonnets in Italian. The first four are seen as an interrupted dream, while the last three are a contemplative response. ref name kleinhenz192 ... 3B2 J The Interrupted Dream of Paolo Lanfranchi da Pistoia. The work is often compared to the pulpits sculpted by Giovanni s father Nicola Pisano , in the Baptistery of Pisa and the Duomo of Siena . According to an inscription running between the pulpit s arcades and parapets, it was commissioned by one Arnoldo together with the treasurers Andrea Vitelli and Tino di Vitale, celebrating Giovanni who was able to surpass his father in wisdom with this work. The structure is similar to the pulpit in Pisa a hexagonal plan with seven columns one in the middle , two of which are supported by lions and one by a stooping figure of Atlas architecture Atlas , while the central one rests on three winged gryphon s and the remaining ones on plain bases. The organization of the parapet s reliefs is inspired by the pulpit in Siena. The iconographic program is also inspired by Nicola s work, with Allegories in the pendentive s of the arches, Sibyl s and Prophet s standing on the capitals tops, and the five parapets with the following scenes from the Life of Christ Annunciation , Nativity , apocryphal scene of Midwifes Bathing Christ Child and Annunciation to the Shepherds Dream of the Magi Massacre of the Innocents Crucifixion Last Judgement The sixth parapet is missing, as its side provides access to the pulpit.
