Biography Michelina Metelli was born in Pesaro , Italy , to a wealthy Italian family. She married into the noble House of Malatesta Malatesta family at the age of 12 and was widowed by age 20. She led a lifestyle of parties and luxury but, after the death of her only son, she experienced a vision of him in heaven, and decided to become a Franciscan penitent . She proceeded to give away all her belongings and property, and founded the Confraternity of the Annunciation to care for the poor, nurse the sick and bury the dead. Initially her family believed her to be insane and had her locked up. Upon her release from confinement, she made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land as penance for her sins. It is believed that she received the Stigmata in the course of this journey. Michelina died at her home in Pesaro on 19 June 1356 of natural causes. Beatification She was beatified on 13 April 1737 by Pope Clement XII . Campaignbox Italian Wars The War of Urbino 1517 was a secondary episode of the Italian Wars . The conflict ensued after the end of the War of the League of Cambrai 1508 1516 , when Francesco Maria I della Rovere decided to take advantage of the situation to recover the Duchy of Urbino , from which he had been ousted in the previous year. In the early 1517 he presented himself under the walls of Verona to hire the troops which had besieged the city, now to be returned to the Republic of Venice . Della Rovere set off with an army of some 5,000 infantry and 1,000 horses which he entrusted to Federico Gonzaga lord of Bozzolo, reaching the walls of Urbino on January 23, 1517. He defeated the Papal States Papal condottiero Francesco del Monte and entered the city hailed by the population. Pope Leo X reacted by hastily hiring an army of 10,000 troops under Lorenzo II de Medici , Renzo di Ceri , Giulio Vitelli and Guido Rangoni and sending it against Urbino. Lorenzo was wounded by a bullet from an arquebus on April 4 during the siege of the Mondolfo castle, and returned to Tuscany. He was replaced by Cardinal Bibbiena . The latter was however unable to control the troops, and, defeated with relevant losses at Monte Imperiale , was forced to retreat to Pesaro . The war was however ended by the lack of money of Francesco Maria della Rovere, who soon found himself unable to pay the troops hired at Verona. After some unfruitful ravages in Tuscany and Umbria, he began to seek for a diplomatic settlement with the pope. The university was founded in 1506, and currently has about 20,000 students, many of whom are from overseas. The university has no central campus as such, and instead occupies numerous buildings throughout the town and in the surrounding countryside. The main accommodation blocks are situated a short distance from the town. The University of Urbino has traditionally given precedence to studies in the humanities, and is especially renowned for its courses in Italian language. In recent years it has suffered economic difficulties, and is currently in the process of becoming state owned. Teatro Rossini is the name of an opera house in Pesaro , Italy that serves as a venue for the Rossini Opera Festival . Built as the Teatro Nuovo on the site of the original 1637 Teatro del Sole , it was inaugurated on 10 June 1818 with a performance of Gioacchino Rossini s La gazza ladra conducted by the composer in the town of his birth. It seats 860, with an auditorium designed in the classic horseshoe shape with four tiers of boxes plus the gallery. The theatre took its present name in the composer s honour in 1854. After a 1930 earthquake it required structural renovations. It re opened in August 1934 with a performance of Guglielmo Tell . In 1966, however, cracks in the walls and decaying woodwork led to its being declared unsafe, and it was closed for 14 years. It re opened again on 6 April 1980, the same year as the first Rossini Opera Festival took place. Since then it has been the home of the annual festival, which is held in August. Additional renovations took place in 2002.
