They are usually horn shaped, and reaching lengths of 2 millimeters, they are among the biggest known unicellular organisms. Appearance and characteristics The body, or Lorica biology lorica , is generally horn shaped, hence the association with the Stentor Greek herald and the former name trumpet animalcule , with a ring of prominent cilia around the anterior bell that sweep in food and aid in swimming. Some reach several millimeters in length, making them among the largest microorganism single celled organisms . Stentor can come in different colors. As in many freshwater protozoans, the Stentor has a contractile vacuole . Because the concentration of salt inside the cell and in the surrounding freshwater is different, Stentor must store water that enters it by osmosis and then discharge it from the vacuole. They can Regeneration biology regenerate , and small fragments can grow into full organisms. Each cell has one often elongated macronucleus and several micronucleus micronuclei . Ecology These protists are common worldwide in freshwater lakes and streams, only S. multiformis has been recorded from marine, freshwater and even terrestrial biotopes. 1. Lipophosphoglycan

Lipophosphoglycan sometimes abbreviated to LPG is a class of molecule found on the surface of some eukaryotes , in particular protozoa . A lipophosphoglycan is made up of two parts a lipid part and a polysaccharide also called glycan part. The two are linked by a phosphodiester bond, hence the name lipo phospho glycan. The lipid part of the lipophosphoglycan is normally found embedded in the cell membrane and the glycan part forms part of the coat of macromolecules on the cell surface. A notable group of organisms which have an extensive lipophosphoglycan coat are the Leishmania spp , a group of single cell ed protozoa n parasite which cause Leishmaniasis in many mammals , including humans . The lipophosphoglycan coat in these organisms has an important role in modulating the host s immune system response to the parasite. Category Biomolecules biochem stub ...   more details
