  1. Protogenes

Ancient Greek painters Protogenes lang el fl. 4th century BC was an ancient Ancient Greece Greek Painting painter , a contemporary rival of Apelles . As with the other famous ancient Greek painters, none of his work has survived, and it is known only from literary references and brief descriptions. He was born in Kaunos Caunus , on the coast of Caria , but resided in Rhodes during the latter half of the 4th century BC. He was celebrated for the minute and laborious finish which he bestowed on his pictures, both in drawing and in color. Apelles, his great rival, standing astonished in presence of one of these works, could only console himself by saying that it was wanting in charm. Pliny the Elder, in his Natural History, relates the story of a contest between Apelles and Protogenes Apelles sailed to Rhodes , eager to see the works of a man only known to him by reputation, and on his arrival immediately repaired to the studio. Protogenes was not at home, but a solitary old woman was keeping watch over a large panel placed on the easel. In answer to the questions of Apelles, she said that Protogenes was out, and asked the name of the visitor Here it is, said Apelles, and snatching up a brush he drew a line of extreme delicacy across the board. 1. Philiscus of Corcyra

Other people2 Philiscus disambiguation Philiscus Philiscus of Corcyra , or Philicus was a distinguished tragic poet, and one of the seven who formed the Tragic Pleiad , was also a priest of Dionysus , and in that character he was present at the coronation procession of Ptolemy II Philadelphus in 284 BC . Pliny states that his portrait was painted in the attitude of meditation by Protogenes , who is known to have been still alive in 304 BC . It seems, therefore, that the time of Philiscus must be extended to an earlier period than that assigned to him by the Suda , who merely says that he lived under Ptolemy Philadelphus. He wrote 42 dramas, of which we know nothing, except that the Themistocles , which is enumerated among the plays of Philiscus of Athens the comic poet, ought probably to be ascribed to him such subjects are known to have been chosen by the tragedians, as in the Marathonians of Lycophron . The choriambic hexameter verse was named after Philiscus, on account of his frequent use of it Hephaestion grammarian . p. 53 . There is much dispute whether the name should be written, polytonic or polytonic , but the former appears to be the true form, though he himself, for the sake of metre, used the latter. Spyridon Filiskos Samaras from Corfu Corcyra , the composer of the Olympic Hymn was named after Philiscus.
