He is best known for conspiring with his colleague Fan Qiang to assassinate their superior Zhang Fei in 221 before the Battle of Xiaoting . In fiction In Luo Guanzhong s historical novel Romance of the ThreeKingdoms , Zhang Fei ordered Zhang Da and Fan Qiang to prepare mourning attire for the troops, as he was planning to join Liu Bei in attacking Sun Quan to avenge Guan Yu and take back Jing Province. Zhang Da and Fan Qiang failed to meet the deadline and were flogged by Zhang Fei in anger. They knew they were unable to complete the mission and were afraid of being punished, so they murdered Zhang Fei while he was asleep, and defected to Sun Quan.
