Of Reformation is a 1641 pamphlet by John Milton , and his debut in the public arena. Its full title is Of Reformation of Church Discipline in England . Background This work was followed by four others, also related to church hierarchy and Presbyterianism . Christopher Hill historian Christopher Hill considers that Milton was somewhat influenced, in the series, by the style of the pamphleteer Martin Marprelate , back in print and notes that the timing in May 1641 was in the same month as the execution of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford , and the fall of William Laud , Archbishop of Canterbury . Further, Hill points out Milton s special interest in the cultural and moral consequences, as he saw them, of episcopacy . ref Hill 1977 p. 81 ref The work was Milton s first independently produced work, and was published in May 1641 under the title Of Reformation Touching Church Discipline in England And the Cavses that hitherto have hindred it . The first page offers an alternate title, Of Reformation in England . ref name Wheeler p. 266 Wheeler 2003 p. 266 ref Tract In Of Reformation , Milton relies on the concept of a body to serve as a metaphor for his analysis of religion . Primary sources date May 2010 The Postmodern Reformation is a movement presently taking place throughout Western culture in which Christianity is experiencing a dramatic cultural shift away from institutionally centralized Christian practice closely related to primary Christendom values which have undergirded Roman Catholic , Orthodox Christianity Orthodox , and Protestant culture since the 4th century. The movement parallels a number of other characteristic aspects of postmodernity including the adoption of primary extrainstitutional loyalties, a decentralized philosophy of cultural influence emphasizing authentic relationships, personal opportunity and responsibility for global and local contexts, and the localization of lifestyle. It also emphasizes a return to the values of 1st century Christian lifestyle using the tools of 21st century living.
