- Wheat germ agglutinin
Wheat germ agglutinin or WGA is a lectin that protects wheat Triticum Triticum vulgaris from insects, yeast and bacteria. An agglutinin protein, it binds to N acetyl D glucosamine and Sialic acid . N acetyl D glucosamine in the natural environment of wheat is found in the chitin of insects, and the cell membrane of yeast & bacteria. WGA is found abundantly but not exclusively in the wheat kernel, where it got the germ name from. In mammals the N acetyl D glucosamine that WGA binds to is found in cartilage ref http www.springerlink.com content l436342163g6m764 ref and cornea ref http onlinelibrary.wiley.com doi 10.1002 cne.902680202 abstract ref among other places. In those animals sialic acid is found in mucous membranes, e.g. the lining of the inner nose, and digestive tract. - Metalloproteinase
Metalloproteinases or metalloproteases constitute a family of enzyme s from the group of protease s, classified by the nature of the most prominent functional group in their active site . These are proteolysis proteolytic enzymes whose catalytic mechanism involves a metal. Most metalloproteases are zinc dependent, but some use cobalt . The metal ion is coordinated to the protein via three ligands . The ligands co ordinating the metal ion can vary with histidine , glutamate , aspartate , lysine and arginine . The fourth coordination position is taken up by a labile water molecule. There are two subgroups of metalloproteinases exopeptidase s metalloexopeptidase s Enzyme Commission number EC number 3.4.17 . endopeptidase s metalloendopeptidase s 3.4.24 . Well known metalloendopeptidases include ADAM protein s and matrix metalloproteinase s. Treatment with chelating agent s such as EDTA leads to complete inactivation. EDTA is a metal chelator which removes zinc, which is essential for activity. They are also inhibited by the chelator orthophenanthroline . - Abrin
Refimprove date March 2011 Image Abrus precatorius pods.jpg thumb Jequirity Abrin is a toxalbumin that is found in the seeds of a plant called the lucky bean , rosary pea or jequirity pea . Abrin is similar to but far more deadly than ricin , the toxin found in the seeds of the castor oil plant . ref cite journal author Dickers KJ, Bradberry SM, Rice P, Griffiths GD, Vale JA title Abrin poisoning journal Toxicological reviews volume 22 issue 3 pages 137 42 year 2003 pmid 15181663 doi 10.2165 00139709 200322030 00002 ref It is classed as a Select Agent under U.S. law . Physical properties Abrin is a lectin Proteopedia 1abr and can be made in the form of a powder, a mist, a pellet, or it can be dissolved in water. Powdered abrin is yellowish white in colour. Abrin is a stable substance, meaning that it can last for a long time in the environment despite extreme conditions such as very hot or very cold temperatures. Use Abrin is not known to have been weaponised. ref http www.bt.cdc.gov agent abrin basics facts.asp Overview at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ref The rosary pea , which is the source of abrin, is common to many tropical areas throughout the world and is sometimes used as a herbal remedy. The seeds of the rosary pea have been used to make beaded jewelry, which can lead to abrin poisoning if the seeds are chewed and swallowed. The outer shell of the seed protects the contents from the stomachs of most mammals. Abrin has some potential medical uses, such as in treatment to kill cancer cells. Toxicity Abrin works by penetrating the cells of the body and inhibiting cell protein synthesis. By attaching to a carbohydrate chain on the cell surface, the abrin molecule anchors itself to the cell, is subsequently engulfed and enters the inner parts of the cell where it reacts with a ribosomal subunit and interferes with the normal protein synthesis process of the cell. Without these proteins, cells cannot survive. This is harmful to the human body and wi ... more details
