In the Easter Rising in Dublin on 24 April 1916, the Proclamation of the IrishRepublic read by Patrick Pearse was headed and signed as being issued by the Provisional Government of the IrishRepublic . The Rising lasted five days and, despite controlling only a few strategic sites, transformed the political picture in Ireland and began a chain of events that led to Independence for the Irish Free State six years later. It is probable that all the leaders of the Rising expected to be defeated, and in a very short time. The object of their action was to strike the first blow in the struggle for freedom, rather than actually to establish a republic, with institutions, policies and government. The establishment of a Provisional government , therefore, was symbolic rather than practical. In contrast with the D il government of 1919 1922, which had a cabinet, a police force, a courts system etc., the Provisional Government of April 1916 does not appear ever to have operated as such. Image Kings Proclamation 1775 08 23.png thumb right A 1775 printing of the proclamation The Proclamation of Rebellion , officially titled A Proclamation for Suppressing Rebellion and Sedition , was the response of George III of the United Kingdom to the news of the Battle of Bunker Hill at the outset of the American Revolutionary War . Issued August 23, 1775, it declared elements of the Thirteen Colonies American colonies in a state of open and avowed rebellion . It ordered officials of the British Empire to use their utmost endeavours to withstand and suppress such rebellion . The Proclamation also encouraged subjects throughout the Empire, including those in Great Britain, to report anyone carrying on traitorous correspondence with the rebels so that they could be punished. The Second Continental Congress issued a response to the Proclamation on December 6, saying that while they had always been Allegience loyal to the king , the Parliament of Great Britain British Parliament never had any Legitimacy law legitimate claim to authority over them, because the colonies were not democratically represented. Congress argued that it was their duty to continue resisting Coercive Acts Parliament s violations of the British Constitution , and that they would retaliate if any supporters in Great Britain were punished for favouring, aiding, or abetting the cause of American liberty .
