for the action axiom in praxeologypraxeology Refimprove date July 2007 An action axiom is an axiom that embodies a criterion for recommending action. Action axioms are of the form IF a condition holds, THEN the following should be done. Decision theory and, hence, decision analysis are based on the maximum expected utility MEU action axiom. In general, the principle for action embodied by an action axiom such as MEU is highly defensible, and its scope is very broad. The action axiom is the basis of praxeology, and it is the basic proposition that all specimens of the species homo sapiens, the homo agens, purposefully utilize means over a period of time in order to achieved desired ends. In Human Action, Mises defined action in the sense of the action axiom by elucidating blockquote Human action is purposeful behavior. Or we may say Action is will put into operation and transformed into an agency, is aiming at ends and goals, is the ego s meaningful response to stimuli and to the conditions of its environment, is a person s conscious adjustment to the state of the universe that determines his life. Such paraphrases may clarify the definition given and prevent possible misinterpretations. But the definition itself is adequate and does not need complement of commentary. ref name Mises Action Ludwig von Mises. Human Action , p. 11, r. Purposeful Action and Animal Reaction . A performative contradiction arises when the propositional content of a statement contradicts the presuppositions of asserting it. An example of a performative contradiction is the statement this statement can t be asserted because the very act of asserting it presupposes it can be asserted. Various Examples The statement Don t do as I do, do as I say is a performative contradiction because it s assertion presupposes it being speech said by an asserter, rendering the two directives contradiction contradictory . The statement hierarchy Hierarchies do not existence exist offers a more subtle example of performative contradiction referring to the very capacity of making a statement, because the statement itself is a hierarchy of semiotics semiotic relations of letters as symbols formed into words as signifiers formed into a sentence as a statement . Usage in philosophy Solipsism is often held to be a performative contradiction if stated. J rgen Habermas , Hans Hermann Hoppe and related philosophers point out that statements spoken during justificatory argumentation carry additional presuppositions and so certain statements are performative contradictions in this context. Habermas claims that post modernism s epistemological relativism suffers from a performative contradiction. Widely considered Mises magnum opus , it presents the case for laissez faire capitalism based on the author s praxeology , or rational investigation of human decision making. It rejects positivism within economics . It defends an A priori and a posteriori a priori epistemology and underpins praxeology with a foundation of methodological individualism and speculative laws of apodicticity apodictic certainty. Mises argues that the free market economy not only outdistances any government planned system, but ultimately serves as the foundation of civilization itself. National konomie Theorie Des Handelns und Wirtschaftens is the 1940 German language predecessor to Human Action . Synopsis Mises sees economic calculation as the most fundamental problem in economics. The economic problem to Mises is that of action. Man acts to dispel feelings of uneasiness, but can only succeed in acting if he comprehends causal connections between the ends that he wants to satisfy, and available means. The fact that man resides in a world of causality means that he faces definite choices as to how he satisfies his ends. Human action is an application of human reason to select the best means of satisfying ends. The reasoning mind evaluates and grades different options. This is economic calculation. Economic calculation is common to all people. Mises insisted that the logical structur ... more details
Austrian School sidebar expanded Theory Catallactics is the praxeology praxeological theory of the way the free market system reaches exchange ratio s and price s. It aims to analyse all actions based on monetary calculation and trace the formation of prices back to the point where an agent makes his or her choices. It explains price s as they are and not as they should be. The laws of catallactics are not value judgment s, but aim to be exact, objective and of universal validity. It was first used extensively by the Austrian School Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises . Friedrich Hayek used the term Catallaxy to describe the order brought about by the mutual adjustment of many individual economies in a market. ref Hayek, F.A. Image Frank Van Dun.jpg right thumb Libertarianism sidebar Frank Van Dun born February 22, 1947 is a Belgium Belgian law philosopher and libertarianism libertarian natural law theorist. He is associated with the law faculty of the University of Ghent . A book by Michael van Notten , The Law of the Somalis , was in part influenced by van Dun. Work Van Dun published his book Het Fundamenteel Rechtsbeginsel Dutch language Dutch for The Fundamental Principle of Law in 1983. In this book he argued that a rationally convincing answer to the question what is law? can only be found by respecting dialogue and argumentation. He thus adheres to discourse ethics justification of private law society or anarcho capitalism . Based on this premise, Van Dun argues that every natural person individual has a lawful claim on his life, freedom and property. This claim is absolute, in so far it does not prohibit the equivalent claims of other natural person, i.e. in so far argumentation is respected. Van Dun clearly distinguishes the lawful ius and the legal lex . In his view, Western positive law systems reduce people to human resources, artificial persons with merely legal status. Positive law defines the legal but can only be lawful in so far individuals have full secession rights from the institutional framework that is making said positive law. It logically follows that no judge can be forced upon a person who is willing to search a lawful solution for any conflict. Van Dun claims that the correct interpretation of the non aggression principle NAP is praxeology praxeological rather than physical, because property is a means of action . He thus claims freedom before property instead of freedom as property . This implies that it s not necessarily only the last action in the chain of social causations that is unlawful. Consider the following examples With regards to land encirclement, a praxeological NAP could imply a freedom proviso when the encircling land owner refuses to discuss a ... more details

Brief summary From the back cover of the second edition blockquote The topics covered by Hans Hermann Hoppe are wide ranging employment, interest, money, banking, trade cycles, taxes, public goods, war, imperialism, and the rise and fall of civilizations but the core theoretical insight uniting the entire discussion is as consistently applied here as it is neglected by the economic mainstream the absolute inviolability of private property as a human right as the basis of continuous economic progress. br br The right to private property is an indisputably valid, absolute principle of ethics, argues Hoppe, and the basis for civilizational advance. Indeed, it is the very basis of social order itself. To rise from the ruins of socialism and overcome the stagnation of the Western welfare state s, nothing will suffice but the uncompromising privatization of all socialized that is, government property and the establishment of a contractual society or anarchy based on the recognition of private property rights. blockquote Contents Preface to the Second Edition Preface to the First Edition Part One Economics 1 Fallacies of the Public Goods Theory and the Production of Security 2 The Economics and Sociology of Taxation 3 Banking, Nation States, and International Politics A Sociological Reconstruction of the Present Economic Order 4 Marxist and Austrian Class Analysis 5 Theory of Employment, Money, Interest, and the Capitalist Process The Misesian Case Against Keynes 6 How is Fiat Money Possible? or, The Devolution of Money and Credit 7 Against Fiduciary Media 8 Socialism A Property or Knowledge Problem? At the beginning of the 1950s, Vall e wrote his first publications on what he named op rateur d observation which means in English operator of observation . The latter, in the simplest case, allows a cybernetic system to observe the state of its environment and itself. Thereafter, on the basis of these results, a decisional operator will be able to indicate the action to be taken. The two stages of perception and Decision making decision are distinguished by intellectual convenience , ref fr Robert Vall e, Cognition et syst me , l Interdisciplinaire, Lyon Limonest, 1995, p. 5. ref but it is interesting to gather them in a unique operator, known as pragmatism pragmatic . A decision is influenced by the observation of events, but also by past perceptions. That means that, in the observation made at a given moment, traces of past observations are also present. Eventually, these processes follow one another in a loop. Vall e defines the study of this situation with the term epistemo praxeology , underlining the existing link between knowledge episteme , resulting from observation , and action philosophy action praxis .
