He wanted to correct what in his time was believed to be an error in the counting of his predecessors PopeJohn XV John XV to PopeJohnXIXXIX . Details Confusion in numbering Popes John results from an error in the textual transmission of the entry on John XIV 983 984 in the Liber Pontificalis . This entry originally specified not only the duration of his pontificate VIII mens. eight months , but also the duration of his ensuing imprisonment by Antipope Boniface VII , per IV menses for four months . In the 11th century, some time after the pontificate of JohnXIX , this entry on John XIV was misread to be referring to two different popes John, the first reigning for eight months and directly succeeded by another John reigning for four months Iohannes m. VIII John, eight months Iohannes m. IV John, four months In distinguishing these two Johns, the second one came to be numbered as Iohannes XIV. bis John XIV the second and it was confused with a historic character, the cardinal deacon John son of Robert, who opposed Boniface VII after John XIV s death. Given the fact that the following Popes John, from John XV 985 996 until JohnXIX 1024 1034 , seemed to have neglected the existence of John XIV bis , Petrus Hispanus meant to correct this error by electing for himself the name John XXI. Unreferenced date July 2008 The Tiara of PopeJohn XXIII was the personal Papal Tiara triregnum in Latin , triregno in Italian language Italian presented by the region of Bergamo to Angelo Roncalli, who was born there, following his election as PopeJohn XXIII in 1958. Because PopeJohn s election as pope was so unexpected the region had not made plans to have a tiara manufactured. As a result John was crowned with the 1877 Palatine Tiara given to Pope Pius IX . In 1959 the tiara was completed and given to the Pope in the Vatican. When asked for guidance as to its design, PopeJohn requested that it be lightweight and that the number of Gemstone jewel s the region was planning to use be halved, with the savings donated to the poor. The tiara as a result is the joint lightest in the papal tiara collection, weighing only 2 pound mass lb 900 gram g John wore the tiara regularly during his papacy when not wearing either the Palatine Tiara or the Tiara of Pope Pius XI. It has remained unworn since his death in 1963. His successor Pope Paul VI was supplied with his own, far heavier solid silver tiara. Pope Paul later dispensed with wearing any tiara. Later popes, though they never abolished the wearing of the tiara, have chosen personally in each case not to wear one.
