  1. Pontic languages

About the form of Greek language Pontic Greek one of the language families in Caucasus Northwest Caucasian languages other uses Pontic disambiguation Pontic is the proposed language family or macrofamily , comprising the Indo European languages Indo European and Northwest Caucasian languages Northwest Caucasian language families, with Proto Pontic being the reconstructed proto language . History of the proposal The internal reconstruction of the Indo European proto language done by Benveniste and Lehmann has set Proto Indo European PIE typologically quite apart from its daughters. In 1960, Aert Kuipers noticed the parallels between a Northwest Caucasian language, Kabardian language Kabardian , and PIE. It was Paul Friedrich in 1964, however, who first suggested that PIE might be phylogenetically related to North Caucasian languages Proto Caucasian . In 1981, Colarusso examined typological parallels involving consonantism, focusing on the so called Laryngeal theory larygeals of PIE and in 1989, he published his reconstruction of Proto Northwest Caucasian PNWC . Eight years later, the first results of his comparative work on PNWC and PIE were published in his article Proto Pontic Phyletic Links Between Proto Indo European and Proto Northwest Caucasian , an event which may be considered the actual beginning of the hypothesis. Evidence Examples of similarities that have been noted include Nasal negating particles in both families PIE n Germanic languages Germanic un , Romance language Romance in , Russian language Russian ne . 1. Pontic Group

The Pontic Group or Pontic vases is a sub style of Greek vase painting Greek black figure vase painting from South Italy . Image Etruscan amphora Louvre E703 side B.jpg thumb Diomedes and Polyxena , Pontic amphora by the Silenus Painter , circa 540 30 BC. Paris Louvre . Stylistically, Pontic vases are very closely related to Ionic vase painting . It is assumed, that the vases were produced in Etruria by craftsmen who had immigrated from Ionia . Their misleading name was coined by Georg Ferdinand D mmler on the basis of a vase depciting an archer, whom he mistook to be a Scythian , a people who lived on the Black Sea or Pontus . The majority of Pontic vases were found in graves at Vulci , a further considerable number at Cerveteri . The leading shape was a neck amphora of strikingly slender shape, very similar to the Tyrrhenian amphora . Other shapes include oinochoe oinochai with spiral handles, dinos dinoi , kyathos kyathoi , plates and stemmed cups, kantharos kantharoi and other shapes occur rarely. The artistic scheme of Pontic vases is uniform. Usually, they bear ornamental decoration on the neck, followed by figural motifs on the shoulder, then a further ornamental band, an animal frieze and a ring of rays. Foot, part of the neck and handles are black. The importance of the ornaments is striking. Some of the vessels bear purely ornamental decoration. Image Judgement of Paris Staatliche Antikensammlungen 837.jpg thumb left Judgement of Paris on the name vase of the Paris Painter , amphora, circa 530 BC. Munich Staatliche Antikensammlungen . The clay of Pontic vases is yellowy red. The shiny slip ceramics slip covering them is black to brownish red, of high quality, with a metallic sheen. Red and white paint is used copiously for figures and ornaments. Animals are usually decorated with a white stripe on the belly. Ornamentation is often executed quite carelessly.
