  1. Polka-mazurka

unreferenced date November 2008 The polka mazurka is a dance , musically similar to the mazurka , but danced much like the polka dance polka . Many polka mazurkas were composed by Johann Strauss II and his family. Johann Strauss I did not compose any of this type of music the first polka mazurka example written by the Strauss family was in the year 1854 by Johann Strauss II , entitled La Viennoise op. 144. The polka mazurka was not credited to the Strauss family alone, as many Viennese composers in the 1850s era also wrote many examples. This variant of the polka was seen as cross cultural, as many of its influences can be seen in the French polka with its feminine and deliberate steps as well as the exciting schnell polka, where Eduard Strauss composed many famous pieces of this type. Polka mazurka music Its tempo of 3 beats to the bar 3 4 time meant that it was similar in rhythm to the waltz , but the emphasis of the polka mazurka was on the first beat of the bar as opposed to the waltz which places its beats on the last two as epitomised by the Viennese waltz with its heavily accentuated final two beats to the bar. The polka mazurka does possess a similar structure to the polka, with a main theme quickly proceeding to its subsidiary theme which is usually brash and loudly played. The trio section is free style and need not associate with the main theme nor of the same key signature . The Strauss family, Josef Strauss in particular, attempted in most of his famous polka mazurkas to blend in sensitivity and romanticism, as can be heard in his pieces Sympathie op. 73, and Frauenherz op. 166, which were inspired by his concern for social issues faced by women in that by gone era. 1. Explosions-Polka

Explosions Polka , opus number op. 43, is a polka written by Johann Strauss II in 1847 . The title was inspired by a discovery of guncotton or nitrocellulose by Germany German scientist Christian Friedrich Sch nbein in 1840 . The Viennese press eagerly reported this discovery many years later in 1846 , describing many products that can then be made explosive . True to Strauss pedigree for writing novelty pieces, he captured on the vogue for the word explosions , of which the Viennese press frequently pressed for a waltz with such a title and nature. The result was the disarmingly charming polka Explosions Polka , which he wrote for the benefit concert entitled Lust Explosionsfest Joyful Explosions Festival held in the Str ussl S le of the Josefst dter Theater on 8 February 1847. The polka incorporates many explosion effects throughout the piece, and is one of Strauss most popular pieces as a young composer. It has ever since retained its popularity up to today. 1. Paraguayan polka

Paraguayan polka , also known as Danza Paraguaya Paraguayan dance , is a style of music created in Paraguay in the 19th century. The Paraguayan polka is very different from the traditional polka , mainly because the Paraguayan version combines ternary and binary rhythm s, whereas the European only uses binary. The Juxtaposition literary juxtaposition of the mentioned rhythms gives the peculiar sound that characterizes this style. There are several variants of the Paraguayan polka such as polca syryry , polca kyre y , polca popo , polca saraki , polca galopa , polca jekutu . All of them are slightly different because of the different influences and styles adopted by the composers in the early years of the Paraguayan polka. The oldest polkas in Paraguay are from the early 19th century, such as Campamento Cerro Le n , Alfonso Loma , Mam Cumanda , Che Lucero Aguai y , Ndarekoi La Culpa and Carreta Guy . 1. Figaro-Polka

Figaro Polka op. 320 is a French polka written by Johann Strauss II in 1867 and was dedicated to Auguste Delaunay de Villemessant , who was the editor in chief of the Paris newspaper Le Figaro . Strauss was persuaded to travel to Paris after the 1867 Fasching by Comte Charles Xavier Eustache d Osmond, a friend of Strauss who had earlier came for the 1866 Fasching in Vienna and had advised the composer cum conductor to give concerts in the France French capital. Strauss, with his astute business capabilities coupled with his wife, Henrietta Treffz s equally shrewd financial management sought to secure contracts to perform and organise concerts at the Paris World Exhibition in spring 1867. Strauss could not travel with his Strauss Orchestra and he had to conclude an agreement with the King of Prussia s Director of Music Benjamin Bilse to attempt that venture, sharing the conducting of Bilse s orchestra . Bilse s excellent and well trained orchestra stole the show in Paris under Bilse himself but is ironically not a signal of enthusiasm for Strauss waltzes and polkas as Bilse conducted works by other composers, with Strauss only managing lukewarm interest when he had the opportunity to conduct his share. Paris was a melting pot of musical entertainment with stiff competition and there was little encouragement for Strauss at the beginning. Further, he was against the idea of making his entry into Paris as grand as possible as advertisements and other so called trumpetings , in the words of Henrietta Jetty Treffz reached 10,000 francs a day. Strauss had hoped for a miracle and he got one in the form of de Villemessant, the dedicatee of the Figaro Polka who skillfully championed ..., he readily acknowledged de Villemessant s role and therefore dedicated the new polka to the latter ... complex with Bilse s orchestra. The polka is in the French polka style, with deliberate feminine ... and delighful musical froth. As expected, its cheeky finale sufficiently affirms the polka as one of Strauss ...   more details
