Benjamin Boss January 9, 1880&ndash 1970 was an United States American astronomer . He was born to Lewis Boss and Helen M. Boss. After attending The Albany Academy , he graduated from Harvard University in 1901 and worked at Dudley Observatory until 1905. Following a year at the United States Naval Observatory U. S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. , he became director of the U.S. Naval Observatory at Samoa, 1906 1908. In 1908 he joined the Department of Meridian Astrometry of the Carnegie Institution of Washington , working as a secretary until 1912, then acting director until 1915 when he became director. He also served as director of Dudley Observatory since 1915. His primary work was in positional astronomy, particularly in the positions and motions of the stars. His father served as editor of the Astronomical Journal from 1909 until his death 1912, whereupon Benjamin undertook the duty until 1941. In 1936 his General Catalogue of 33,342 Stars was published by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, DC. During his medical studies he was strongly influenced by the psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler . Boss believed that modern medicine and psychology, premised on Cartesianism Cartesian philosophy and Newtonian physics, made incorrect assumptions about human beings and what it means to be human. A fire boss is a person employed at a mining mine or state certified official, responsible for examining a mine for dangers, particularly explosive , poisonous or suffocating gases. Usually the fire boss is the first person to enter a Mining mine , to verify its safety, before a shift crew enters. It may also loosely refer to a foreman or shift manager. Origins In the early days of mining the fire boss would wear thick clothing, usually soaked in water, and walk through the mine with a lit candle affixed to a long stick. If there were pockets of explosive gases the candle would ignite them, often not sparing the boss on the other end. Less dangerous methods are used today such as pumping air into the mine to dilute the levels of dangerous gases see explosive limit .
