  1. North Road (Plymouth)

North Road is the name of a once prominent artery in Plymouth , Devon , that served as an offshoot of the North Hill end of the Tavistock Road, leading from Mutley Plain . The Road ran from North Hill, See North Hill, Plymouth , down to the old Royal Naval Hospital in Stonehouse, See Stonehouse, Plymouth , and is notable chiefly for its proximity to the Plymouth railway station , the largest of six surviving facilities in the City , which was opened in 1877 as the North Road Station. With the regeneration of Plymouth, after the Second World War , the road was affected by the construction of the North Cross Roundabout and the consequent widening of the Alma Road approach a development which saw the North Road split in two, now North Road East and North Road West . Of the two sections, North Road East still serves as the access point to Plymouth Railway Station a one way system leading traffic around the North Cross Roundabout, down to the station via the North Road East entrance route, and back out onto the Alma Road approach, leading city bound traffic back across the roundabout . North Road East also serves as one of the roads bordering the main campus of Plymouth University . Category Streets in Plymouth, Devon ...   more details

  1. North Hill, (Plymouth)

North Hill is the name of a prominent artery in Plymouth , Devon , formerly known as Tavistock Road being one of several such roads in Plymouth . While North Hill had originally referred only to the northern end of the road, leading onto Mutley Plain , the name has since supplanted Tavistock Road and is used to describe the entire stretch, from the Mutley Plain Greenbank Road intersection, down to what is now Drake Circus, See under History in Drake Circus Shopping Centre . The road is significant, not only as one of three roads bordering the main campus of Plymouth University, North Road East and Cobourg Street, being the other two , but also as the location of the Main Library and Museum, See Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery . Another library, the Plymouth Proprietary Library, is found at the northern end of North Hill and is notable for being the City s oldest surviving collection of books and papers, established in 1811. The City Museum and Main Library are also poignant reminders of the Blitz on Plymouth during the Second World War The Library and Museum being one building, with the northern part of the building housing the museum, and the southern part, the library , there is a noticeable difference in the rooftop the library having been destroyed by a direct hit, during an air raid in 1941. The join between the old roof and the new, represents a tide mark of destruction, with almost every building in the City centre being destroyed continuing right up until the the Barbican district. Another poignant reminder is found in the Portland Square Memorial, the Square facing onto North Hill, just opposite the Museum , which commemorates the tragic loss of life caused, when an air raid shelter received a direct hit during a raid on the 22 23 April 1941, the same raid which destroyed the Main Library . The bomb killed at least 76 people the highest civilian death toll from a single such incident, in Plymouth during the War. Category Streets in Plymouth, Devon ...   more details
