Location and discovery The plough was discovered on the 9th of July 1927 by Jann Han en and his son Heye, at the bottom edge of a 1.7 m deep layer of peat. As a reward, Jann Han en received 50 German Reichsmark Reichsmark , which had to share with the landowner, a man called Weinstock. Extent of excavation The ploughbeam is made from a single oak branch and circa 3 m long the ploughshare originally measured about 60 cm. The handle is set in a rectangular opening of the share and stabilised by additional wedges. The front part of the share is missing, because the plough had been accidentally cut into several pieces by its finders. Pollen samples were already taken in 1927 for Palynology palynological analysis . This showed that the plough dates to the Bronze Age Early Bronze Age at the earliest. Since it represents a fairly developed form of the scratch plough , the Walle find could also date to the later Bronze Age or Iron Age Early Iron Age . A similar plough, also of oak and of similar measurements, was found at Papau near Toru . The foot plough is a type of spade used for cultivation, in the north west of Scotland . The Scottish Gaelic language contains many terms for the various varieties, e.g. cas dh reach straight foot for the straighter variety and on, but cas chrom bent foot is the most common variety and refers to the crooked spade. Although no longer as common as they once were, they are still used in some places, especially the Outer Hebrides . It is an implement of tillage peculiar to the Scottish Highlands Highlands , used for turning the ground where an ordinary plough cannot work on account of the stony ground. It is of great antiquity and is described as follows by Armstrong It is inexpeditious in comparison with the plough, eight men being necessary to dig as much with it in one day, as a horse would plough in the same time. Image Stump jump plough.jpg thumb Plan of the original single furrow plough The stump jump plough is a kind of plough invented in South Australia in the late nineteenth century by Richard Bowyer Smith to solve the particular problem of preparing Mallee habit mallee lands for cultivation. The problem Mallee biogeographic region Mallee scrub originally covered large parts of southern Australia, and when farmers moved into these areas they found it peculiarly difficult to clear the land. After the trees were cut down, the roots energetically produced regrowth. These young shoots and the old roots could be killed by repeated burning see below , but the large roots remained in the ground, making it impossible to plough the soil. Grubbing the roots out was a slow and labour intensive activity, and the problem was seriously hindering agricultural expansion. In South Australia, land was being offered under the Scrub Act of 1866 to farmers on lease, with the option of purchasing after 21 years at the price of 1 per acre. However, grubbing the scrublands was proving costly, at approximately 2 per acre, and solutions to the problem were desperately sought. Solutions The situation had grown so frustrating by 1878 that the South Australian government offered a reward of 200 to anyone who could develop an effective mechanical stump puller although myriad devices were developed, none proved to be a breakthrough success. Thomas R. Plough is an American sociologist most notable for having served as president of North Dakota State University and Assumption College . Plough is a graduate of Michigan State University . He began his career at Alma College , where he rose to serve as dean of students.
