Although the geo prefix typically indicates topics of or relating to the Earth , planetarygeology is named as such for historical and convenience reasons. Due to the types of investigations involved, it is also closely linked with Earth based geology. Planetarygeology includes such topics as determining the internal structure of the terrestrial planets , and also looks at planetary volcanism and surface processes such as impact Impact crater crater s, fluvial and Aeolian processes aeolian processes. The structures of the giant planets and their moons are also examined, as is the make up of the minor bodies of the solar system, such as asteroid s, the Kuiper Belt , and comet s. Eugene Shoemaker is credited with creating the Branch of Astrogeology now called the Astrogeology Research Program within the U.S. Geological Survey . He made important contributions to the field and the study of impact crater s, Lunar Science , asteroids, and comets. Coronae on Venus see also List of coronae on Venus Image Fotla Corona PIA00202.jpg thumb 200px Fotla Corona On Venus, coronae are large typically several hundred kilometres across , crown like, volcanic features. Coronae were first identified in 1983, when the radar imaging equipment aboard the Venera 15 and Venera 16 spacecraft produced higher resolution images of some features previously thought to be impact craters. It is believed that coronae are formed when plumes of rising hot material in the mantle push the crust upwards into a dome shape, which then collapses in the centre as the molten magma cools and leaks out at the sides, leaving a crown like structure the corona. The largest corona on Venus is the Artemis Corona , which is 2100  km in diameter. Planetary Radio is a weekly 30 minute radio show devoted to space exploration and astronomy , hosted and produced by Mat Kaplan and The Planetary Society . Every week, it consists mostly of interview s and telephone based conversations with a scientist , engineer , project manager , artist , a writer and an astronaut . In addition, it contains segments such as Questions and Answers , hosted by Emily Stewart Lakdawalla , space headlines, and the program ends with a light hearted segment called What s Up with Bruce Betts which highlights where and when you can see significant astronomical events that week, a random space fact, an announcement of any anniversaries, and a space trivia contest where randomly chosen participants can usually win a t shirt , poster or calendar. Occasionally, Planetary Radio will cover proceedings of conferences related to the exploration of space. It made its debut on the Internet in November 2002, with an interview with Planetary Society executive director Louis Friedman Louis D. Friedman , in Windows Media . Unreferenced date December 2009 Planetary phase is the term used to describe the appearance of the illuminated section of a planet . Like lunar phase s, the planetary phase depends on the relative position of the sun , the planet and the observer. As seen from Earth , the inferior planet s may exhibit the full range of phases from new only the unilluminated hemisphere being visible to full. In the case of Venus , observations during the crescent phase often reveal that the unlit portion is still emitting some light this phenomenon is known as the ashen light , and is currently unexplained. Seen from space, the Earth also seems to go through phases. Superior planet s can only ever appear as full or gibbous. In the case of Mars , at quadrature 87 per cent of the planet is illuminated as seen from Earth the more distant planets have increasingly greater minimum phases. oneref date February 2010 A planetary scanner also called an orbital scanner is a type of image scanner for making scans of rare book s and other easily damaged documents. In essence, such a scanner is a mounted camera taking photograph photos of a well lit environment. Originally, such scanners were expensive and could only be found in archive s and museum s, but with the availability of cheap, high Display resolution resolution digital camera s, DIY planetary scanners have become affordable, and for instance are being used by volunteer scan providers for Project Gutenberg . Flatbed scanners often come in contact with at least part of the object to be scanned. They also require books to be fully opened most of the time there are some exceptions where the scanning surface ends at the edge of the flatbed scanner, so that a book can be opened partially . Both practices can damage rare books For example, opening a book 180 degrees can be damaging to its spine. These scanners are also implemented to scan other fragile documents such as old maps. ref National Mine Map Repository http mmr.osmre.gov MMR Equip.aspx State of the Art Equipment at the National Mine Map Repository ref Planetary scanners tend to touch fewer parts of a book, and provide an option of only opening a book partially. orphan date April 2010 Unreferenced date March 2009 Planetary chauvinism is a term coined by Isaac Asimov to describe a belief held by certain individuals that human society will be planet based, rather than space based, despite the potential benefits of the latter. It argues that all the benefits of a planet can be achieved in space, usually by an O Neill Cylinder type structure. Just because you evolved on a planet does not necessitate that you continue to live on one. And there are some profoundly good reasons not to do so. Like that big honkin gravity well that you have to expensively and dangerously blast your way up out of each time you need to go someplace. And the bigger the planet, the worse the penalty.
