Though the Eastern Orthodoxy Eastern Orthodox churches and the Catholic Church did not East West Schism split until long after the origin of plainchant, Byzantine chant s are generally not classified as plainsong. Plainsong is Monophony monophonic , consisting of a single, unaccompanied melodic line. It generally has a more free rhythm than the metered rhythm of later Western music. Media Kyrie Eleison Orbis Factor.ogg Listen to it interpreted. Plainchant is believed to originate from the 3rd century A.D. Gregorian chant is a variety of plainsong named after Pope Gregory I 6th century A.D. , although Gregory himself did not invent the chant. The tradition linking Gregory I to the development of the chant seems to rest on a possibly mistaken identification of a certain Gregorius , probably Pope Gregory II , with his more famous predecessor. For several centuries, different plainchant styles existed concurrently. Standardization on Gregorian chant was not completed, even in Italy , until the 12th century. Plainchant represents the first revival of musical Musical notation notation after knowledge of the ancient Greek system was lost. Plainsong notation differs from the modern system in having only four lines to the staff and a system of note shapes called neume s. In the late 9th century, plainsong began to evolve into organum , which led to the development of polyphony . ON was a solo project of Ken Andrews , which he started after the breakup of his previous band, Failure band Failure . The music of ON was not unlike that of Failure, in terms of Songwriter songwriting , but the overall sound was more based on Electronic music electronics , with less emphasis on guitar s and the typical Hard rock heavy rock sound. ON was signed to Epic Records in 1999, and the first single, Soluble Words , was released late that year. It contains four versions of the song, including a remix by Martin Gore of Depeche Mode , and an exclusive track called Your Sister Says John written by Andrews friend Jordon Zadorozny of Blinker the Star . After several months, ON s album Shifting Skin was released in June 2000. Ken then assembled a backing band, which consisted of drummer Tim Dow ex Shiner band Shiner Season to Risk , bassist Tommy Walter Abandoned Pools , guitarist Joey Sykes, and keyboardist Kevin Moore, and took ON on tour. Another single, Slingshot , was serviced to radio, but the album didn t sell well, and Epic eventually released Andrews from his contract. A second ON album, Make Believe , was released in 2002 via CD Baby and the iTunes Store . Also in 2002, he and Dow formed a new group called Year of the Rabbit . Currently, Andrews is working both as a solo artist and as a member of Digital Noise Academy, as well as being a sought after Record producer producer and session musician .
