Multiple issues unreferenced September 2007 cleanup September 2007 orphan February 2009 Deep Sea PhysicalOceanography is the study of flow dynamics , geology and geophysics , and thermodynamics thermo and hydrodynamics of the deep sea, where deep sea means below 15 m. The flow of the ocean in deep sea is dramatically slowed than that of the surf zone and surface flow. This is due to the salt content being larger than that on the surface. Also, the average temperature drops about 20 or so degrees. The temperature can be found with the formula math T a 3.14 D math In this, math T math is the temperature in degrees Celsius, math a 30.77 math , and math D math is depth. So, in the Mariana Trench , math T 0 math , which is about as cold as it gets. But, as we have seen with the ALVIN submersible, we have found that the deep sea isn t just a cold abyss. There are hydrovents, and some reach up to 100 C. So, according to the formula above, the temperature of the area around the hydrovent is math C T T math math T math is the temperature given above, and math T math is the temperature of the vent. Now, with temperature there is going to be entropy. When ALVIN discovered the hydrovents, the sea life and entropy were evident. Well, with the formula for entropy in the deep sea anywhere, for that matter in the ocean is math S TA mathrm d t math Where math S math is entropy, math T math is temperature which also could be C in the equation presented above and math A math is area of the rock formation, and math mathrm d t math is the differential of time under consideration. How this formula is measured is the total number that entropy sea life, disorder, so forth and on on over the area math A math . Flow patterns and dynamics follow basic hydrodynamical laws, but because it is denser, the flow is measured as a whole, not coordinate by coordinate. This is measured by tensor s, and this is a fairly new field. Category Physicaloceanography ocean stub ... more details
Chemical oceanography is the study of ocean chemistry the behavior of the chemical element s within the Earth s ocean s. The ocean is unique in that it contains in greater or lesser quantities nearly every chemical element element in the periodic table . Much of chemical oceanography describes the biogeochemical cycle cycling of these elements both within the ocean and with the other Earth s spheres spheres of the Earth system see biogeochemical cycle . These cycles are usually characterised as quantitative flux es between constituent reservoir water reservoirs defined within the ocean system and as residence time s within the ocean. Of particular global and climate climatic significance are the cycles of the biologically active elements such as carbon cycle carbon , nitrogen cycle nitrogen , and phosphorus cycle phosphorus as well as those of some important trace elements such as iron . Another important area of study in chemical oceanography is the behaviour of isotopes see isotope geochemistry and how they can be used as tracers of past and present oceanographic and climatic processes. For example, the incidence of sup 18 sup O the heavy isotope of oxygen can be used as an indicator of polar ice sheet extent, and boron isotopes are key indicators of the pH and carbon dioxide CO sub 2 sub content of oceans in the geologic past. image Mooring hg.png thumb right Sketch of a mooring with traps and current meters A mooring in oceanography is a collection of devices, connected to a wire and temporarily anchored on the sea floor. The devices are Ekman current meter current meters to measure the direction and speed of ocean current s, sediment trap s to catch settling particles from the water column or experimental chambers, e.g. to measure the solubility of certain substances in sea water. A mooring can be free floating or anchored for some days to weeks short time . Long time moorings might be deployed for a maximum duration of two years. An Acoustic Release acoustic release connects the mooring to an anchor weight on the sea floor. The weight is released by sending a coded acoustic command signal from a ship. The weight e.g. old rail wheels is unrecoverable. Floaters permit the mooring to come up to the surface to be recovered by a research vessel. Acoustical oceanography is the use of underwater sound to study the sea , its boundaries and its contents. History Expand section date May 2008 The earliest and most widespread use of sound and sonar technology to study the properties of the sea is the use of an echo sounder to measure water depth. The development of high resolution sonar in the second half of the 20th century made it possible to not just detect underwater objects but to classify them and even image them.
