Demetrius was the younger son of PhilipV of Macedon , but his only son by his legitimate wife, the elder brother Perseus of Macedon Perseus being the son of a concubine. ref Livius. xxxix. 53 ref After the battle of Cynoscephalae , Philip was obliged to surrender Demetrius, then very young, to Titus Quinctius Flamininus as a hostage, and he was subsequently sent to Rome in the same capacity in 198 BC. Five years afterwards he was honourably restored to his father, Philip having at this time obtained the favour of Rome by his services in the war against Antiochus the Great . But this did not last long, and Philip finding himself assailed on all sides by the machinations of Rome, and her intrigues among his neighbours, determined to try to avert, or at least delay, the impending storm, by sending Demetrius, who during his residence at Rome had obtained the highest favour, as his ambassador to the senate. The young prince was most favourably received, and returned with the answer, that the Romans were willing to excuse all the past, out of good will to Demetrius, and from their confidence in his friendly dispositions towards them. But the favour thus shown to Demetrius had the effect as was doubtless the design of the senate of exciting against him the jealousy of Philip, and in a still higher degree that of Perseus, who suspected his brother, perhaps not without cause, of intending to supplant him on the throne after his father s death, by the assistance of the Romans. Perseus therefore endeavoured to effect his ruin by his intrigues and having failed in accomplishing this by accusing him falsely of an attempt upon his life, he suborned Didas , one of Philip s generals, to accuse Demetrius of holding treasonable correspondence with the Romans, and of intending to escape to them. A forged letter, pretending to be from Flamininus, appeared to confirm the charge and Philip was induced to consign him to the custody of Didas, by whom he was secretly put to death, as it was supposed ... more details

Lehideux and Isorni v. France case no. 55 1997 839 1045, application no. 24662 94, Publication 1998 VII, no. 92 , was a case heard by the European Court of Human Rights on punishing statements praising Collaborationism collaborators . In a judgement handed down 23 September 1998, the court has held by fifteen votes against six that the conviction of applicants for their article in favour of Philippe P tain was prescribed by law and pursued a legitimate aim, but wasn t necessary in a democratic society and therefore violated Article 10 freedom of expression . Besides, the court has ruled that the case does not belong to the category of clearly established historical facts such as the Holocaust whose negation or revision would be removed from the protection of Article 10 by Article 17 Para. 47 . In doing so the court has ruled that the protections in Article 17, the prohibition of abuse of rights, could restrict the right of free speech granted under Article 10. This ruling has had a direct influence on International treaty law. Funke v. France was a legal case heard by the European Court of Human Rights ECtHR in September 1992, with the court publishing its judgement on 25 February 1993. The case was given to the Court in December 1991, the application had been made in February 1984, and related to events occurring in 1980. Background Jean Gustave Funke had brought a case against France , arguing that the nation had breached the European Convention on Human Rights . The demand that he produce documents was an attempt to compel self incrimination and breached his right to silence Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms Article 6 right to a fair trial Article 6 paragraphs 1 and 2 , and the search of his home was conducted without sufficient safeguards to prevent a breach of his right to privacy Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms Article 8 right to respect for private life Article 8 . Following his death in July 1987, the case was continued by his wife Ruth. Funke, in 1980 a resident of Lingolsheim , had been visited on 14 January of that year by three customs officers and an officier de police judiciaire . They were investigating tax evasion claims raised by government authorities in Metz . After questioning Funke they spent five and a half hours searching his home a number of financial documents, a car repair bill, and two cameras were seized. The customs officials seizures did not lead to proceedings in regard to the cause of their investigations the possible breach of regulations concerning financial dealings with foreign countries , but did result in the officials demanding further document disclosure by Funke of financial statements relating to specific accounts in the proceeding three years 1977 79 and to the purchase of a house ...
