File Castile Soap.jpg thumb right A bar of Castile soap. Castile soap is a name used in English language English speaking countries for olive oil based soap made in a style similar to that originating in the Castile historical region Castile region of Spain . History The origins of Castile Soap can be traced back to The Levant where Aleppo soap artisans have been making an olive and laurel oil based hard soap for millennia. It is commonly believed that the Crusaders brought Aleppo Soap back to Europe with them in the 11th century. Following the Crusades, production of this soap was extended to the whole Mediterranean area. The first European soap making factories were created in the 12th century in Spain Alicante, Malaga, Carthagene and Castile and in Italy Naples, Savone, Genoa, Bologna and Venice and then, in the middle of the 15th century, in Marseille France, giving birth to Marseille soap . ref http www.syriahandmade.com galleries soap text soap 1.htm . Retrieved September 2011. ref However, early soap makers in Europe did not have easy access to laurel oil and therefore dropped it from their formulations thereby creating an olive oil soap now known as Castile soap. Importations of Castile soap through Antwerp appear in the London port books of 1567&ndash 68 Dietz 1972 , though the Oxford English Dictionary has no references to Castile soap earlier than 1616. In his article http www.pharmj.com Editorial 19991218 articles soap.html A short history of soap , John Hunt maintains that barilla an impure form of sodium carbonate obtained from plant ashes was boiled with locally available olive oil, instead of tallow . By adding brine to the boiled liquor, the soap was made to float to the surface, where it could be skimmed off by the soap boiler, leaving the excess lye and impurities ... Society . Mayor of Castile died 1032 or after 1066 was queen of Kingdom of Navarre Navarre . She was originally called Muniadona or Mu adona and is variously called Munia or Mu a Mayor or just Munia or Mu a . In Spanish, she is called Muniadona de Castilla . It is said that her husband Sancho III of Navarre Sancho the Great renamed her from her contemporary name Muniadona to Mayor, for she was the eldest in her family, yet since she had an aunt of the same name, the story is clearly apocryphal. Rodrigo died 873 was the first count of Castile , reigning from about 850 to his death. Some Al Andalus Iberian Muslim writers refer to a brother or brother in law of Ordo o I of Asturias Ordo o I , while others assign the same role to a Ruderick without stating a relationship, and the references have been interpreted as referring to the same man. This has been used by authors such as Fern ndez de B thencourt, writing in 1897, to suggest that count Rodrigo was a son of Ramiro I of Asturias and his supposed second wife, Urraca Paterna actually just Paterna, Urraca being the wife of a later prince Ramiro and half brother of Ordo o, but Barrau Dihago dismissed this interpretation for want of evidence. He was created governor of the eastern march marca oriental of the realm, which later became the county of Castile, by Ordo o, possibly upon the latter s assumption of the crown. He took part in Ordo o s Repoblaci n , repopulating Amaya in 860. He was at the side of the king in many battles of the Reconquista , including the siege and sack of Albelda in 859. In 863, the brother of Ordo o fought Muslim troops, and in 865 Rodrigo was defeated magnificently at Bureba by the troops of the emir of C rdoba , resulting in the sacking of his castles and those of other noblemen in Castile, which brought to a temporary halt the process of reconquest and repopulation of the area. When railroads were built in northern Spain in the nineteenth century, the Channel turned into the spine of a huge irrigation system due to its inefficiency as a means of transport.
