  1. File:ChurchBell.jpg

Summary This is a large heavy bell from a church in the United States. Because of its size, this bell did not fit the church s bell tower, so the bell sits on a bell cote made of stone. A bell cote, also spelled bell cot, is a stand or a shelter for a bell. Peal the bell When a large heavy bell is rung by pulling a rope that causes the bell to move back and forth to strike the clapper, you are pealing the bell. At a church with such a bell, it is common to peal the bell for most regular worship services. The rope in the photograph attaches to the top of this bell, and so this rope can only be used to peal this bell. Toll the bell When a large heavy bell is rung by pulling a rope that is tied to the clapper, causing the clapper to strike the bell, you are tolling a bell. At a church with such a bell, it is common to toll the bell for funerals. In this photograph, you can see at the bottom of the clapper a place where the tolling rope can be attached. The tolling rope has a noose that is put around the bottom of the clapper and tightened. This is my photograph and you are welcome to use it. 1. Parson's Barn

Parson s Barn is a large sea level cavern below the Ballard Point cliffs, between Studland and Swanage bays in the English Channel . Ballard Point is the headlands and bays headland of the Ballard Down s, an area of chalk downland , on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset , southern England . Parson s Barn lies directly east of Studland, a few hundred Metres south of Handfast Point and the Old Harry Rocks . The cave is about five Kilometres northeast of Swanage. The sea once washed a huge hole in the base of the cliffs. This cavern was then used as a smugglers cave. A large section has collapsed since then and has been eroded away by the sea. Now only a few chalk stacks remain and the waves have cut arches through the base of the stacks. As the winds blow through these arches during severe gales it results in sounds similar to a ghostly pealing of bells. Legend has it, that the eerie sound comes from a ship, transporting bells to a church in Poole , that sank because of the crew s blasphemy. Which, since he strikes each bell as he passes it, are also all the possible melodies their pitches might make. As in many of Tom s works, theory and practice are identical here... You see and hear the structure of the piece. That s not even remotely abstract instead, it s pure happiness, as the pealing bells seem to ring with Tom s concentration visible in his face and body, audible in his steady steps , and his joie de vivre. At the age of 55, Johnson had to stop performing this athletic piece, but Matthias Kaul, Adam Weisman and others have developed their own interpretations of the score, using their own sets of bells. The front panels make up a large enthroned Madonna and Child with saints and angels, and a predella of the Childhood of Christ with prophets. The reverse has the rest of a combined cycle of the Life of the Virgin and Life of Christ in a total of forty three small scenes several panels are now dispersed or lost. Though it took a generation for its effect truly to be felt, Duccio s Maest set Italian painting on a course leading away from the hieratic representations of Byzantine art towards more direct presentations of reality. History The painting was installed in the cathedral of Siena on June 9, 1311. One person who witnessed this event wrote blockquote And on that day when it was brought into the cathedral, all workshops remained closed, and the bishop commanded a great host of devoted priests and monks to file past in solemn procession. This was accompanied by all the high officers of the Commune and by all the people all honorable citizens of Siena surrounded said panel with candles held in their hands, and women and children followed humbly behind. They accompanied the panel amidst the glorious pealing of bells after a solemn procession on the Piazza del Campo into the very cathedral and all this out of reverence for the costly panel The poor received many alms, and we prayed to the Holy Mother of God, our patron saint, that she might in her infinite mercy preserve this our city of Siena from every misfortune, traitor or enemy. blockquote Besides the Virgin Mary and the Baby Jesus, ...   more details
