Manning was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 1994. Prior to being elected to the State Assembly, Manning served as an executive aide for then Assemblyman Glenn E. Warren and a Dutchess County Legislator for the 20th District. As an Assemblyman, Manning remained relatively unknown outside of his district. In late 2005, Manning began making strides towards a gubernatorial camapaign. He found strong support initially from within the Conservative Party of New York New York Conservative Party . Manning s main opponents for the Republican nomination for governor were John Faso , the former New York Assembly Minority Leader and unsuccessful candidate for New York State Comptroller in 1998, and William Weld, the former governor of Massachusetts and unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senate in 1996. Weld became a resident of New York and also registered to vote in the state. Manning ended his gubernatorial campaign shortly after an email was sent to the press accusing him of having an extramarital affair. Manning admitted that he and his wife were divorcing and that he was dating. Manning decided to seek re election to his Assembly seat. In the Republican primary election on September 12, 2006, Manning was defeated by Tivoli, New York Tivoli Mayor and Dutchess County legislator Marcus Molinaro . Manning held a lead in the Columbia County portion of the district, but this was not enough to overcome Molinaro s lead in the Duchess segment. Born at Darlinghurst, New South Wales Darlinghurst to baker John Manning and Margaret Harrocks, he worked as a financier and had extensive business interests. Around 1867 he married Honorah Torpy in Sydney , with whom he had eight children. He was a City of Sydney Sydney City alderman from 1887 to 1900 and mayor from 1891 to 1894, in which year he was knighted. From 1893 to 1894 he was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly , representing Electoral district of South Sydney South Sydney . PatrickManning born 1941 is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of World History at the University of Pittsburgh . He is also president of the World History Network, Inc., a nonprofit corporation fostering research in world history. A specialist in world history and African history , his current research addresses global historiography, early human history, migration in world history, the African diaspora, and the demography of African slavery . He was educated at the California Institute of Technology BS in Chemistry, 1963 and the University of Wisconsin Madison MS in History and Economics, PhD in History 1969 . He was trained as a specialist in the economic history of Africa, and went on to explore demographic, social, and cultural patterns in Africa and the African diaspora. Manning taught at Northeastern University , 1984 2006, where he directed the World History Center. He served as Vice President of the Teaching Division of the American Historical Association , 2004 2006.
