    Joseph Patrick Kelly Joe Kelly is a scholar, editor, and professor of English at the College of Charleston . He currently serves as Speaker of the Faculty. He earned his B.A. from the University of Dallas and received his Ph.D. in English in 1992 from the University of Texas, Austin . Dr. Kelly was born in 1962 and resides in Charleston, South Carolina . Scholar and Professor Dr. Kelly is a tenured professor, speaker of the faculty, and past graduate director of the English program at the College of Charleston . His book Our Joyce From Outcast to Icon was published in 1998, and he has written critical articles on James Joyce and presented at the American Conference for Irish Studies. In addition to his interests in modern British fiction, he conducts research in antebellum South Carolina history and recently published Henry Laurens and the Southern Man of Conscience in the South Carolina Historical Magazine . Dr. Kelly is an active member of the faculty senate and also serves as a Western Civilization professor for the Honors Program. During his undergraduate career, Dr. Kelly was a co author of the Groundhogiad , an epic poem about drinking beer. Editor Dr. Kelly edited the five volume Seagull Reader series for W.W. Norton. Each volume offers introductory material and anthology reading appropriate for composition and literature classes. The collection includes Seagull Reader Essays , Seagull Reader Poetry , Seagull Reader Plays , Seagull Reader Stories , and Seagull Reader Literature .     Patrick Joseph Kelly , Bishop of Benin City , 31 August 1894 18 August 1991. A native of Barnacragh, Ballinasloe . His grandparents lived on Seymour estate, Clontuskert. Trained as a missionary priest, Kelly joined the SMA Society for African Missions , attending the seminary at Blackrock road, Cork city Cork . Ordained there 29 June 1921, he spent much of his religious life spent in Nigeria . Many of his colleges died young on the missions. He was consecrated bishop at St. Michael s Church, Ballinasloe, on the 2 June 1940, but was unable to return to Africa because of World War II until 1941. He was notable for aiding in the construction of dozens of schools and churches in the diocese . There were 157 schools in 1939 in 1973, there were 786. He retired in 1973. Born in Wichita, Kansas , Kelly received a Bachelor of Arts B.A. from Wichita University in 1951 and an LL.B. from Washburn University School of Law in 1953. He was in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1955. He was in private practice in Wichita, Kansas from 1955 to 1980. On April 14, 1980, Kelly was nominated by President Jimmy Carter to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Kansas vacated by Wesley E. Brown . Kelly was confirmed by the United States Senate on May 21, 1980, and received his commission on May 23, 1980. He served as chief judge from 1992 to 1995, assuming senior status on June 6, 1995. Kelly served in that capacity until his retirement from the bench, on March 15, 1996. He died in Wichita, Kansas .
