    Sir Patrick Bateson , Royal Society FRS aka Paul Patrick Gordon Bateson born 31 March 1938 is an England English biology biologist and science writer. Bateson is emeritus professor of ethology at University of Cambridge Cambridge University and president of the Zoological Society of London since 2004. Bateson s grandfather s cousin was the genetics geneticist William Bateson . Patrick Bateson received his Bachelor of Arts BA degree in zoology and Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. degree in ethology animal behaviour from University of Cambridge Cambridge University . Previous academic positions include a Harkness Fellowship at Stanford University http www.edge.org 3rd culture bios batesonp.html and ten years as head of the Cambridge sub department of Animal Behaviour. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1983.     There have been two Baronetcies created for persons with the surname Bateson , one in the Baronetage of Ireland and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom . The Bateson Harvey , later Bateson Baronetcy , of Killoquin in the County of Antrim, was created in the Baronetage of Ireland on 26 August 1789 for Robert Bateson Harvey, with remainder to the heirs male of his father Richard Bateson. Born Robert Bateson, he assumed by Royal license the additional surname of Hervey in 1788 which was that of his maternal grandfather . He died without legitimate issue and was succeeded according to the special remainder by his nephew, the second Baronet. He was the son of Thomas Bateson, the son from his father s first marriage. He notably served as High Sheriff of Donegal in 1822. However, he was childless and on his death in 1870 the baronetcy became extinct.     For the politician Thomas Bateson, 1st Baron Deramore Thomas Bateson , Batson or Betson c. 1570 &ndash 1630 was an English writer of madrigal music madrigals in the early 17th century. He is said to have been organist of Chester Cathedral in 1599, and is believed to have been the first musical graduate of Trinity College, Dublin . He served as Vicar Choral and organist of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin from 1609 until his death. He is known to have written church music, but only one of his anthem s has survived, a seven voice composition entitled Holy, Lord God Almighty . His fame rests on madrigals, which give him an important place among Elizabethan composers. He published a set of madrigals in 1604 and a second set in 1618, and both collections have been reprinted in recent years. He died in 1630.     Mike Bateson is an England English businessman and former chairman of Torquay United F.C. Torquay United Football Club . Bateson was brought up in Blackpool and after a spell in the Scots Guards made his fortune selling double glazing in the South West of England . In May 1990, after selling his windows company, he became chairman of Torquay United and saw the side promoted to Football League Third Division at the end of the next season, Torquay beating Blackpool F.C. Blackpool on penalties in the Football League Fourth Division Football League play offs play off final at Wembley Stadium , in doing so becoming the first Football League team to win promotion on penalties. However, they lasted just one season at this level before being relegated, and did not win promotion for 12 years.     Catherine Bateson born 1960 Brisbane , Australia . She is an Australian writer . Catherine Bateson grew up in a second hand bookshop in Brisbane. She attained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Queensland , with a major in art history. Her first published novel was Painted Love Letters , a portrait of a family coping with death. She has published two volumes of poetry, and three verse novels for young adults using a variety of poetic forms including haiku , free verse , free renga and acrostic . Catherine has taught creative writing for the past thirteen years, and has been a guest writer at many schools. Her work has been read on radio and featured on television. She has also appeared at various poetry and writers festivals throughout Australia. She coordinated La Mama Poetica at La Mama Theatre Melbourne for ten years until 1999. Catherine is the mother of two children, Alasdair, born in 1991 and Helen, born 1992. She currently teaches creative writing at GippsTafe , Victoria Australia Victoria and lives in the Dandenong Ranges , Victoria. He was the son of William Gandy Bateson & Agnes Dingwall Bateson n e Blaikie . He was the older brother of Sir Alexander Dingwall Bateson. Bateson entered Rugby School on 2 May 1869, where he started playing rugby. Bateson was married to Susan Clara Lemonius on 19 October 1881, at All Hallows Church. Susan s brother, Gerard MacLean Lemonius C.B.E. was also another Old Rugbeian who went on to play for Clifton R.F.C. Oxford University Bateson entered Trinity College, Oxford 19 October 1874 aged 19, and was awarded B.A. of the Inner Temple, 12 December 1877.
