He was born in Penrith, Cumberland the son of a Birmingham merchant and educated at King Edward s School, Birmingham King Edward VI School , Birmingham, after which he was apprenticed to George Freer at Birmingham General Hospital. He then transferred to St. Bartholomew s Hospital , London. He practised at King Street, Cheapside, and was editor of the London Medical Review . He also served at the York Military Hospital, Westminster . In 1918 he decided to return to Birmingham and was elected Surgeon to the Birmingham General Hospital in December, 1821. In the autumn of 1823 he organised a campaign for an Eye Infirmary in Birmingham which was successful, the Charity opening for the reception of patients on April 13th, 1824. He acted as sole Surgeon until May, 1828, when at his request he was replaced by Richard Middlemore. He was asked in 1840 to become Surgeon to the Middlesex Hospital and Professor of Surgery at King s College, but declined both offers. In 1849, having made a considerable fortune in Birmingham, chiefly by lithotomy, he returned to London. He received his B.S. in 1969 from the University of Virginia and his Ph.D. in 1972 from University of California at Berkeley. His principal research interests include inorganic, bioinorganic, structural and biophysical chemistry. His research group focuses on questions relating to how structure at different organizational levels relates to function. His research is done using a number of different x ray spectroscopic and scattering techniques such as x ray absorption spectroscopy XAS . One of his main area of focus is the active site of the enzyme nitrogenase, which is responsible for conversion of atmospheric dinitrogen to ammonia. Using XAS studies at the S, Fe and Mo edge, his group has worked to understand the electronic structure as a function of redox in this cluster. Other projects include the study of iron in dioxygen activation and oxidation and the role of copper in electron transport and in dioxygen activation. Competing in two Summer Olympics , he earned his best finish of eighth in the Canoeing at the 1952 Summer Olympics Men s C 2 1000 metres C 2 1000 m event at Helsinki in 1952 Summer Olympics 1952 . Prior to the Olympics, Hodgson served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II . While there, Hodgson picked up painting as a hobby. During the 1950s, Hodgson was part of the Painters Eleven which would earn him a position at the Ontario College of Art . A native of Toronto , he died in Peterborough of Alzheimers .
