PatriciaCrowther born 14 October 1927 is considered influential in the early promotion of the Wicca religion. She was born in Sheffield as Patricia Dawson. She was initiated into Wicca by Gerald Gardner in 1960 and is considered one of the early mothers of this religion, like Doreen Valiente , Lois Bourne , and Eleanor Bone . Patricia and her then husband, Arnold Crowther 1909 1974 became the High Priestess and High Priest of the Sheffield Coven which they founded in 1961. PatriciaCrowther has promoted Wicca through several media besides several book publications she has contributed to occult magazines and journals and been interviewed by local and national newspapers. She has also appeared several times on television. In 1971 Patricia and Arnold Crowther wrote and presented A Spell of Witchcraft , which was produced and broadcast by BBC Radio Sheffield in six twenty minute programs. The radio program, the first of its kind in relation to the Wiccan religion, explored history and folklore regarding witchcraft and presented elements of a local coven s activities and practices to a local community. unreferenced date November 2011 Wiccan churches are a type of organization found within some groups of Wicca , particularly in North America. While in Europe Wicca is most often organized into independent coven s, in the United States some covens choose to combine to form a church . Churches are often formed from hive coven s. Each coven in the hive comes together to form a church building church , and often creates a fixed location for a covenstead . Much like a Christian church, a Wiccan church will organize rituals as well as community events. Forming a church also gives High Priests or Priestesses a much better chance of legally becoming clergy . Legal status Many Wiccan and Neopaganism Neopagan organizations have chosen to achieve formal legal status by becoming non profit corporations within their states or provinces, and sometimes they additionally obtain tax exempt status in the United States under 501 c 501 c 3 501 c 3 of the Internal Revenue Code . Examples of this are the Aquarian Tabernacle Church , based in the State of Washington with branches in several other states, and Our Lady of the Woods, a coven and congregation in New Mexico . Frequently, Wiccan churches are organized with a coven or inner circle, consisting of initiated priests and priestesses, and a congregation or outer circle, for those who wish to celebrate the Sabbat neopaganism Sabbat s and enjoy spiritual community. These may or may not seek legal status as corporations. more references date February 2011 The Wiccan Laws , also called the Craft Laws , the Old Laws , the Ardanes or Ordains or simply The Laws are the traditional laws of Wicca from the Book of Shadows . The text of the Book of Shadows was theoretically passed down from generation to generation within the New Forest Coven , which was the coven that introduced Gerald Gardner to Wicca . It is not known whether the New Forest Coven actually existed, as most covens are reclusive by nature. Many Wiccans treat these laws as guidelines instead of governing rules. It is believed that Gardner could have written these laws himself, or at least expanded them. The laws were first revealed by Gardner to other members of the Craft in 1957, after a disagreement arose over Gardner s continued interviews with the media despite his own rules of secrecy. The laws were originally unnumbered, and used the spelling wica , rather than Wicca or Wiccan . The Laws contain correctly used archaic language, however they mix modern and archaic phrases, suggesting a possible assembly from older fragments. The Laws do not appear in earlier known Wiccan documents, including Gardner s Ye bok of Ye Art Magical , Text A or B, or in any of Doreen Valiente s notebooks including one commonly referred to as Text C. Several of the provisions in these laws seem rather disagreeable to many Wiccans of today. For example, its sexist language as a man loveth a woman by mastering her , and cursing people and condemning them to an eternity in the Christian hell And if any break these Laws, even under torture, THE CURSE OF THE GODDESS SHALL BE UPON THEM, so they may never be reborn on earth and may remain where they belong, in the hell .... If Gardner did forge the Laws, this would have implications for earlier aspects of Wiccan history ... of the Wiccan Book of Shadows , introducing to the general public for the first time the possibility of practicing Wiccan style ritual. Accordingly the Laws are known by some non initiatory Wiccans ... more details
