  1. Patriarchal age

Refimprove date July 2007 The Patriarchal Age is the era of the three biblical Patriarchs, Abraham , Isaac and Jacob , according to the narratives of Book of Genesis Genesis 12 50. These chapters also contain the history of Joseph Hebrew Bible Joseph , although Joseph is not one of the Covenantal Patriarchs . The bible contains an intricate pattern of chronologies from the creation of Adam Bible Adam , the first man, to the reigns of the later kings of ancient Kingdom of Israel Samaria Israel and Kingdom of Judah Judah , at which point the bible makes contact with known and dateable history. From these it is possible to calculate strictly within a biblical frame of reference that the birth of Abraham , the first of the Patriarchs, 1,948 years after the Creation, corresponded to 1812 BC. ref The situation is not quite so clear cut as this implies, as there are variant manuscripts of the bible giving variant chronologies, differing by thousands of years the description given here is from the Masoretic text, the basis of most modern English translations. ref Prior to the 19th century there was little interest in questioning the biblical chronology, but with the growth of biblical criticism and the wide popularity of the documentary hypothesis the theory that the Pentateuch , including the Book of Genesis , was composed not by Moses but by unknown authors living at various times between 950 and 450 BC it became increasingly urgent both to supporters of the traditional view i.e., that Genesis was an accurate historical record written by Moses under the direct guidance of God and the new the documentary hypothesis to find concrete arguments to support their respective views. Thus was born biblical archaeology , a form of archaeology different from all others in that it sought ... identified the Patriarchal age in the period 2100 1800 BC, the Intermediate Bronze Age , the interval ... the texts described by the documentary hypothesis were written centuries after the Patriarchal ...   more details

  1. The Historicity of the Patriarchal Narratives

The Historicity of the Patriarchal Narratives Walter de Gruyter, Berlin New York, 1974 is a book by biblical scholar Thomas L. Thompson , Professor of Old Testament Studies at the University of Copenhagen . Subtitled The Quest for the Historical Abraham , Thompson s book, together with John Van Seters s Abraham in History and Tradition 1975 , marked the culmination of a growing current of dissatisfaction in scholarly circles with the then current consensus or near consensus on the Patriarchal narratives. The consensus can be summarised as the view that, even if archaeology could not directly confirm the existence of the patriarchs Abraham , Isaac and Jacob , it nonetheless confirmed that these stories originated in a second millennium BC setting based on the fact that many personal names, place names, and customs referenced in the Genesis narratives were unique to that era. This view was expressed by John Bright in his influential History of Israel 1959, 2nd edition 1960 in these words O ne is forced to the conclusion that the patriarchal narratives authentically reflect social customs at home in the second millennium rather than those of later Israel . ref http www.biblicalstudies.org.uk epn 4 selman.html 7 John Bright, History of Israel , quoted in Martin J. Selman, Comparative Customs and the Patriarchal Age ref Thompson and Van Seters pointed out that in fact none of the archaeological evidence cited by the dominant scholars of the time notably William F. Albright , E. A. Speiser , Cyrus Gordon , and Bright himself actually provided irrefutable proof for the historicity of the Patriarchal narratives. Not only has archaeology not proven a single event of the patriarchal traditions to be historical, it has not shown any of the traditions to be likely. ref The Historicity of the Patriarchal Narratives , p.328, quoted in review by Dennis Pardee in http links.jstor.org ... archaeology. ref Notes Reflist 1 DEFAULTSORT Historicity of the Patriarchal Narratives Category ...   more details
