Chosen by the emperor Andronicus II Palaeologus as patriarch, he opposed the reunion of the Greek and Roman Churches and introduced an ecclesiasticl reform that evoked opposition within the clergy. He resigned in 1293 and was restored in 1303 with popular support. The pro Union clerical faction forced him into retirement in early 1310. He was originally a hieromonk , possibly from the Dionysiou monastery in Mount Athos . He was deposed during the usurpation of John VII Palaiologos in April 1390, and replaced by Patriarch Macarius of Constantinople Macarius , who had already served in the office in 1377 1379. After the restoration of John V Palaiologos and Manuel II Palaiologos a few months later, he was restored to his post. He is notable for his correspondence with Jagiello , Grand Duke of Lithuania , urging him to join in a crusade against the Turks along with the Hungarians, and with Basil I of Muscovy , to whom he defended not only the universal spiritual authority of the Constantinopolitan patriarchate, but also the universal authority of the Byzantine emperors , regardless of the actual diminished state of the Byzantine Empire . Eustathius was Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 1019 to 1025. Eustathius was the protopresbyter of the imperial palace when he was raised to the Patriarchal throne by the Emperor Basil II . Eustathius participated in the efforts of the Byzantines in 1024 to come to an accommodation with the Latin Papacy concerning the widening gap between the Western and Eastern churches, which culminated in the East West Schism Schism of 1054 . At the time of Eustathius, the Papacy claimed dominion over the Christian world, not just primacy, a position which offended Constantinople, the effective spiritual guides of much of the East to include the Russians, Bulgarians and Serbs.
