unclear date August 2011 The Tai Turungs are a numerically small Buddhist community in the North East Indian state of Assam. They originally migrated from Upper Burma and settled in Assam in the latter part of 18th century. On the way of their migration, they were captured and made slaves by the Singpho people and hence they have had a lot of Singpho influences on their culture, language and lifestyle. They presently reside in certain pockets in Upper Assam in the districts of Golaghat , Jorhat and Karbi Anglong . The origin of the word Turung is although not known but many believe that it had derived from the name of a river in Patkai region named Turungpani . While another section of the people believe that the word Turung derived from the word Tai Long meaning Great Tai, since these people were of Shan origin. Their language is basically a dialect of Tai language spoken throughout South East Asia , but it has a large influence of Singpho dialect Singpho language. The language has become almost extinct. Only a handful of elderly people use the language. The present population of the community is unknown but is believed to be around 10,000. The Lushai Hills or Mizo Hills are part of the Patkai range in Mizoram and partially in Tripura , India . Flora & Fauna The hills are for the most part covered with dense bamboo jungle and rank undergrowth but in the eastern portion, owing probably to a smaller rainfall, open grass covered slopes are found, with groves of oak and pine interspersed with rhododendrons. Blue mountain is the highest peak in Lushai hills Inhabitants These hills are inhabited by the Lusei tribe Lushais and other Mizo tribes, but the population is extremely scanty. From the earliest known times the original inhabitants were Kukis , and the Lushais were not heard of until 1840, when they invaded the district from the north. Their first attack upon British territory took place in November 1849, and after that date they proved one of the most troublesome tribes on the north east frontier of India but operations in 1890 resulted in the complete pacification of the northern Lushai villages, and in 1892 the eastern Lushais were reduced to order. The management of the South Lushai hill country was transferred from Bengal to Assam in 1898. To obtain more efficient control over the country the district has been divided into eighteen circles, each in charge of an interpreter, through whom all orders are transmitted to the chiefs. The Welsh Presbyterian Mission began work at Aijal in 1897, and the people have shown unexpected readiness to accept education. 1911 Britannica References T. H. Lewin, Wild Races of N.E. It is a tributary to the Brahmaputra River .The lohit river rises in eastern Tibet, in the Zayal Chu range and surges through Arunachal Pradesh for two hundred kilometers, before disgorging itself in the plains of Assam. Tempestuous and turbulent, and known as the river of blood, only partly attributable to the lateritic soil, it flows through the Mishmi Hills, to meet the Siang at the head of the Brahmaputra valley. The valley of the Lohit is full of surprises. Thickly forested for the most part, it is a botanist s dream,as alpine vegetation gives way to sub tropicla forests, and then to some of the densest tropical jungles in all of India.rhododendrons bloom in many hues in the upper reaches, orchids reveal themselves in the lower froves. This is indeed a treasure house of medicinal plant and herbs, and the home of Mishmi teeta, the coptis plant, prized the world over for it s medicinal properties. The Mishmis hold sway in the hills. In the plains are the Khamptis and the Singphos, fervent Buddhists and migrants from across he Patkai hills from Burma.
