The PatentRolls Calendarium Rotulorum Patentium , Rotuli litterarum patentium are primary sources for English history , a record of the King of England s correspondence, starting in 1202. They record the letters patent , or royal letters issued unsealed, and were started under the Lord Chancellor of England Chancellorship of Hubert Walter . This was during the reign of King John of England , and the patent roll was started in order to keep track of letters that had been issued by the government. Instead of keeping the records in a register or book form, they were written on sheets which were stitched together into long rolls to form a roll for each year. ref name Companion116 Nigel Saul Saul, Nigel A Companion to Medieval England 1066&ndash 1485 Stroud Tempus 2000 ISBN 0 7524 2969 8 p. 116 ref The series stored in the Tower of London started in 1202, and ran to the late fifteenth century. ref http www.medievalhistory.net patents1.htm Calendarium Rotulorum Patentium the PatentRolls ref Notes references External links http www.stradling.org.uk docs Cpr.htm Extracts from Calendar of PatentRolls http www.uiowa.edu acadtech patentrolls Searchable PatentRolls Courtesy of Prof. G.R. The Dawes Rolls or Final Rolls of Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes, or Dawes Commission of Final Rolls were created by the Dawes Commission . The Commission, authorized by United States Congress in 1893, was required to negotiate with the Five Civilized Tribes to convince them to agree to an allotment plan and dissolution of the reservation system. One of the consequences was the creation of rolls of the members of the five tribes Cherokee , Choctaw , Creek people Creek , Chickasaw , and Seminole . The rolls were needed to assign the allotments and to provide an equitable division of all monies obtained. These rolls became known as the Dawes Rolls . The Dawes Commission was quickly flooded by applicants from all over the country trying to get on the rolls. The Commission went to the individual tribes to obtain the membership lists but the first attempts were inadequate. The Hundred Rolls are a census of England and parts of what is now Wales taken in the late thirteenth century. Often considered an attempt to produce a second Domesday Book , they are named for the hundred division hundred s by which most returns were recorded. The Rolls include a survey of royal privileges taken in 1255, and the better known surveys of liberties and land ownership , taken in 1274 5 and 1279 80, respectively. The two main enquiries were commissioned by Edward I of England to record the adult population for judicial and taxation purposes. They also specify the services due from tenants to lord s under the feudal system of the time. Many of the Rolls have been lost and other have been damaged, but a minority survive and are stored at the National Archives UK National Archives in Kew . Where they survive, they are a major source for the period. Those known in the early nineteenth century were published in 1818, while more recent discoveries are being collated by the University of Sheffield . The Gascon Rolls are records from the English government of Aquitaine Gascony and the surrounding area, lasting from to 1273 to 1468. Containing grants of land, oaths of treaties and other important documents, the rolls were originally stored in the Tower of London and Bodleian Library before the start of their publication from the late 19th century. Gascon Rolls The rolls are records of the Court of Chancery concerning Aquitaine, and are mainly dated from Bordeaux .
