Orphan date February 2007 The Panavision HD 900F is the first high definition camera that records in 24 frame per second format. In 1997, Panavision and Sony collaborated to develop the first ever high definition movie camera. Technical aspects Panavision and Sony created a new viewfinder , which is entirely redesigned from the old film camera setup, to allow easier controls while filming. The changes were made in order to produce a film friendly system that utilizes many standard camera accessories, such as the follow focus, matte box, heads, etc. The camera has image quality comparable to industry standards, the lenses utilize state of the art components with the camera itself is still compact and lightweight. The zoom lenses optimize maximum image quality, thus enabling depths of field similar to the 35mm cine formats seen today. For Computer generated imagery CGI filmmakers, a pre filter is used for better color matching and better enhanced resolution for blue screen effects. Cinema history unsourced section date October 2009 The HD 900F High Definition Camera System was first used by George Lucas for Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones . Super Panavision 70 was the marketing brand name used to identify movies photographed with Panavision 70 mm film 70 mm spherical optics between 1959 and 1983. History During the late 1950s the Hollywood filmmaking community decided that changing from filming in the commonly accepted 35 mm format to 65 mm film would provide viewing audiences with an enhanced visual experience. To this end, cameras began to be designed to handle 65 mm film stock. The first camera system to be released using this format was Todd AO , in 1955. The second was MGM Camera 65 , a system designed by Panavision, which was introduced in 1956. In 1959 Panavision released the Super Panavision 70 system to compete with these two cameras. Unlike its counterpart Ultra Panavision 70 , which used anamorphic lenses, Super Panavision used spherical lenses to create a final aspect ratio of 2.20 1. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 A PV mount is a lens mount developed by Panavision for use with both 16 mm and 35 mm movie camera s. It is the only mount offered with Panavision cameras and Panavision designed lenses, and since the company only rents its equipment, this is likely to remain an exclusive arrangement for the time being. However, Panavision also modifies Panavises its third party camera and lens equipment in the interest of allowing clients to retain their personal preferences regarding equipment. As they are the only company who can offer this, customers wanting to use Panavision lenses on non Panavision cameras or vice versa must rent this equipment directly through Panavision. The mount itself contains four pronged flanges, one of which contains a locating pin in the center. This pin must be seated at the bottom of the camera lens mount, the only place in the seating where a complementary hole exists. This means that the lens can only be oriented in one position, which may be perceived as a disadvantage in certain shooting conditions. Although this was originally likely by design to prevent mis orienting anamorphic optics, it remains an issue for spherical lenses. The mount is locked into place using a friction locking ring which, in conjunction with the four prongs of the flange, creates a very strong lens seating. This has become a crucial factor in recent years, as bigger lenses with zoom capabilities, longer focal lengths, or larger lens elements have raised the bar on requirements for mount stability. Furthermore, the tendency is for flange focal distance to become a more critical factor as sharper lenses, film stock with higher resolving ... with the exclusivity of the mount for virtually all shoots renting from Panavision, the PV mount has ... focal distance 57.15  mm Diameter 49.50  mm Cameras 35  mm all Panavision models and several Arri and Moviecam models as available 16  mm Panavision Elaine Citation needed date April 2009 ... more details

In the days before Multiplex movie theatre multiplexes , neighborhood theatre was the colloquial name given to smaller movie theatres located in local neighborhoods, as opposed to the large movie palace s located in downtown areas. Neighborhood theatres would typically show films at cheaper prices, and were often very conveniently located only a few miles from where one lived. However, because of their size, they would usually show reduction print s of films shot in such larger sized formats as Todd AO , Super Panavision 70 , or Ultra Panavision . They would not show Cinerama films unless the print used had been converted to a Cinemascope or Panavision format. Often, very long films would be cut for neighborhood theatres, so that they could be shown continuously, rather than in the two a day performance roadshow format in which they were intended to be shown. Robert Gottschalk 12 March 1918 3 June 1982 was an United States American camera technician and founder of Panavision . Early Life His father, Gustav, was an architect who built a number of hotels in Chicago, IL, where he lived with his wife, Anna. Gustav s success left the family well off financially and influenced Gottschalk s interest in film. After Gottschalk graduated with a degree in theater and arts from Carleton College in Minnesota , he moved to California to become a filmmaker. Career He bought an interest in a camera shop and later got to know a nearby outfit that made underwater filming equipment for Jacques Yves Cousteau . Equipment restrictions at the time made wide angle filming difficult, and Gottschalk began experimenting with anamorphic lens equipment patented by Henri Chr tien . In 1953, the CinemaScope process, based on Chr tien s patents, was purchased and named by 20th Century Fox . While the camera lenses were now available, the process required projection lenses as well. Gottschalk teamed up with several colleagues and began offering projection lenses under the name Panavision, which used prismatic rather than cylindrical optics. This led to a successful expansion into lenses for cameras which are still widely used. ref name 70mm Bijl, Adriaan 2002 . http www.in70mm.com newsletter 2002 67 panavision invention.htm The Importance of Panavision The Invention Phase via in70mm.com ref .
