They added a memory management unit MMU to expand the addressing range to 16 Megabyte MB , features for Computer multitasking multitasking and multiprocessor and coprocessor configurations, a 256 byte cache, and a huge number of new instruction computer science instruction s and addressing modes giving a total of over 2000 combinations . Its internal clock signal ran at 2 or 4 times the external clock s speed e.g. a 16 MHz CPU with a 4  MHz computer bus bus . Later, more successful, enhancements to the Z80 architecture include Hitachi, Ltd. Hitachi HD64180 and Zilog eZ80 , among others. See further Zilog Z800 . IBM demanded all its suppliers to have a second manufacturing source, and Intel had to license another company to secure the IBM PC contract. The Am286 was one of the results of this contract, earlier examples being the AMD versions of the Intel 8086 8086 , Intel 8088 8088 , Intel 80186 80186 and Intel 80188 80188 . Essentially just an Intel 80286 80286 , the Am286 was in reality Intel designed all the way, pin and instruction compatible, based upon Intel s microcode . The chip was later sold by AMD as an embedded system embedded central processing unit processor . It had an advantage over its Intel brethren a higher clock speed. Intel s 286s topped out at 12.5 MHz before they switched production to the Intel 80386 i386 , but AMD continued the production of 286 CPUs and had a 16 Mhz version of the 286 for sale in August of 1987, later even offering a 20 MHz version. gallery Image Ic photo AMD R80286 10 S 286 CPU .png A CLCC version of the Am286 10 Image Ic photo AMD R80286 12 S 286 CPU .jpg A CLCC version of the Am286 12 Image KL AMD 80286 CLCC Bottom.jpg A CLCC version of the Am286 16 Image Ic photo AMD N80L286 16 S 286 CPU .png A PLCC version of the Am286 16 Image Am286.jpg Am286 processor. ...   more details

  1. Mega II

The Mega II is a custom integrated circuit chip from Apple Computer used in some of their Apple II product line. It was used particularly in the Apple IIGS microcomputer , and an updated version, called the Gemini chip, was used in the Apple IIe Card for the Macintosh LC . This custom Application specific integrated circuit ASIC integrated most of the circuitry from earlier Apple II models onto one 84 pin Plastic leaded chip carrier PLCC integrated circuit , drastically simplifying design and cost for Apple. The Mega II contained the functional equivalent of an entire Apple IIe computer sans processor , which, combined with the WDC 65C02 65C02 emulation mode of the WDC 65C816 65C816 processor, provided full support for legacy Apple II software in the Apple IIGS. The result was one of the earliest single chip examples of full system hardware emulation . History In 1984, after the cancellation of the Apple IIx project, Dan Hillman and Jay Rickard, engineers at Apple, were assigned to lower the cost of the Apple II. They were able to compress the design of almost the entire Apple II onto one chip which they named Mega II. ref http apple2history.org history ah10.html Apple II History, Chapter 10 The Apple IIGS ref When the 16 bit Apple IIGS project came onto the table, the virtually completed design of the Mega II was a clear starting point for seamless backwards 8 bit system compatibility. It was used to enhance the synthesizer s audio samples with digital effects, enhancing the realism of the overall sound. The ESP chip was a custom digital signal processor DSP chip with over 75,000 transistors . It had an instruction set that was optimized for manipulating audio data, which has typical Sampling frequency sample rates of between 10 kHz and 50 kHz. The ESP was capable of creating a wide range of digital effects including Reverberation reverb , Delay audio effect delay , Echo phenomenon echo , flanging , Chorus effect chorusing , Harmonic harmonizing , equalization , and distortion , and was capable of generating multiple effects simultaneously. The ESP was a Very Large Scale Integration VLSI device designed in a 1.0 micrometre double metal CMOS process. The multiplicity and flexibility of the data paths in the ESP allowed many DSP operations to be accomplished in a minimum number of microcode microinstructions steps. Its nominal instruction cycle was 250 nanosecond ns , yielding program lengths from about 64 to 160 microinstructions at typical sample rates. Because the ESP chip was fully Computer program programmable , the range of effects was unlimited.
