Bethesda Home for Boys was founded by evangelist George Whitefield , in the 18th century on his 500 acre 1,600 m land grant about convert 10 mi km south of Savannah, Georgia . When Whitefield was just 25, he established the orphanage in the newly founded colony of Georgia. Whitefield called the orphanage Bethesda, which means House of Mercy , for he hoped many acts of mercy would take place there. On March 25, 1740, construction began on the orphanage buildings. The main house was two stories high with twenty rooms. Two smaller buildings were built behind the orphanage one was designed to be an infirmary and the other a workhouse. Whitefield wanted the orphanage to be a place of strong Calvinist influence with a wholesome atmosphere and strong discipline. Youngsters were taught trades so that they could earn a living as adults. Younger children learned spinning and carding, and all boys were taught mechanics and agriculture. Whitefield hoped that the orphanage would become the foundation of a university. While the children grew most of the orphanage food, the enterprise was more expensive than anticipated, and Whitefield went into debt. Benjamin Franklin suggested that due to the scarcity of workmen and materials in Georgia, it might be better to move the orphanage and its children to Philadelphia. Whitefield refused to move the orphanage because his contributors donated money specifically for the Georgia project. At his death, Whitefield bequeathed the orphanage to Lady Huntington, a charitable sponsor in England. He asked her to maintain the orphanage under its existing principles, and establish a college. However, she was not able to provide the oversight from convert 3000 mi km away and no modern communications, and the orphanage almost closed. In 1773, fire destroyed the home. Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage is a world renowned orphanage and sanctuary for Chimpanzee s, the only one of its kind in the world, located in Zambia s Copperbelt Province . The sanctuary was started by David and Sheila Siddle in 1983, when a badly wounded Chimpanzee was brought to the farm, having been rescued from poachers in DR Congo . The Chimpanzee wasn t expected to survive but the pair nursed it back to health. Since then the orphanage has expanded to house over 100 orphaned Chimpanzees in 1,150 acres 4.7 km of forest savanna and fruit Grove nature grove s. The orphanage is now home to numerous other types of animals including peacocks, which roam freely around most of the grounds, an assortment of birds, many of which were brought there to be reared back to health, and a hippopotomus, which was brought there as a baby and now has little trouble getting through the electric fences. Located 60 km west of Chingola on the banks of the Kafue River , the orphanage is a tourist attraction for those living in the Copperbelt towns and for international visitors to Zambia. Chimpanzees are not found in the wild in Zambia, the nearest populations are about 500 km north of Chimfunshi, but wildlife smuggling routes out of the Congo pass through Zambia. In 2002, Sheila Siddle published her autobiography, In My Family Tree A Life With Chimpanzees to widespread acclaim. The Siddles were awarded the Jane Goodall Award for establishing Chimfunshi.
