Gethsemane is a chamber oratorio by the British composer, Matthew King composer Matthew King . Commissioned for the opening concert of the 1998 Spitalfields Festival , the work was composed for the early music group, Florilegium early music ensemble Florilegium and is scored for 4 vocalists soprano, alto, tenor, bass and a Baroque ensemble consisting of flute solo, 2 oboes, 3 natural trumpets, strings, harpsichord and percussion. The oratorio uses a compilation of Biblical texts to relate the New Testament narrative from Christ s triumphal entry into Jerusalem until his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane . Each of the four vocalists represents several characters in the story and all four join together to sing collectively as disciples, pharisees and various crowds. Certain instruments within the ensemble are used to represent characters in the drama for example, Christ is always accompanied with a flute, the pharisees are joined by rumbling timpani and Judas by a solo harpsichord. The Oratorio dei Filippini Oratory of Saint Phillip Neri is a building located in Rome and erected between 1637 and 1650 by Francesco Borromini . He belonged to the Congregation of the Oratory , founded by Philip Neri in 1561. It was there that, in 1600, Emilio de Cavalieri s La rappresentazione di anima e di corpo , regarded as one of the first examples of the genre of the oratorio , was given for the first time. The oratory of Filippini is adjacent to the Chiesa Nuova , the mother church of the congregation. In front of the two sides was a small closed square, now integrated in the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. History The congregation of the Filippini already had one of the most well decorated Baroque churches in Rome, and the order, so enthralled by the piousness encouraged by music, had planned to build an oratory, as well as a residential quarters, adjacent to the church of Santa Maria in Vallicella Chiesa Nuova located in crowded central Rome. Borromini won a competition for designing the structure against many including Paolo Maruscelli . He was employed in the task for 13 years, often a testy process. The Oratorio del Gonfalone or Oratory of the Banner is a building in Central Rome which once housed a Catholic fraternity. Founded in 1264 under the name of the Accomandati di Madonna Santa Maria , over the centuries the group dedicated itself to various activities, including the participation in religious processions as banner carriers wearing white gowns with peaked blue hoods , and also of putting on a yearly passion play. The fraternity was awarded the Golden Rose in 1526 by Clement VII , and given by Julius II in 1550 the prerogative to pardon one individual. In 1890, the fraternity was dissolved and its property confiscated by the state.
