Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Chayei Adam The Life of Man is a work of Halakha Jewish law by Rabbi Avraham Danzig 1748 1820 , dealing with the laws discussed in the Orach Chayim section of the Shulchan Aruch . It is divided into 224 sections 69 dealing with daily conduct and prayer, and 155 with Shabbat Shabbos Sabbath and Jewish Holidays Yom Tov holidays . Chayei Adam was intended primarily for the cultured layman , as opposed to rabbinic scholars, and the work is thus presented in a readily accessible form. In many cities, societies were formed for the purpose of studying Chayei Adam. In this work, Rabbi Danzig collected and critically sifted the Acharonim Acharonic material in the field of the Halakha written in the more than two and a half centuries since the appearance of the Shulchan Aruch . A parallel work Nishmas Adam , published together with Chayei Adam, discusses the halachic issues in greater depth. The two are usually printed together. The scholarship of the work is evidenced by the fact that Rabbi Chaim Volozhin , known for his opposition to digests of halacha , granted the work his approbation on condition that each section be cross referenced to the Shulkhan Arukh to allow for further study . The rulings of the Chayei Adam are often cited in later works, especially the Mishnah Berurah . Category Rabbinic legal texts and responsa Judaism stub Reli book stub he ... more details

Image Various grains.jpg thumb 250px right Grain products Pas Yisroel or Pat Yisrael lit Bread of an Israelite, Hebrew he he products are grain products that were cooked or baked with the participation of an observant Jew. This must be, at minimum, the ignition of the flame used to prepare, cook, or bake the grain product. In classical Rabbinic Judaism, this requirement is considered restricted to the five classical grains of Judaism wheat , barley , oats , spelt , and rye . In the modern food production industry, commercial bakeries may accomplish a status of Pas Yisroel by the use of something called the Shain system , named for the inventor, Rabbi Yehuda Shain whereby an entire apparatus can be ignited remotely by an observant Jew. It is customary that extra care is taken to uphold this observance during the first ten days of the month of Tishrei , between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur . The qualification for one to be considered an observant Jew &ndash and therefore able to uphold the observance of Pas Yisroel &ndash is defined as one who is Shomer Shabbat . This is regardless of Jewish denominations affiliation . As an example of this encompassing multiple denominations, let s use a hypothetical scenario of a Reform Judaism Reform Jew who is a baker, and an Orthodox Judaism Orthodox Jew who wants to buy the baked goods produced by the baker if the baker is Who is a Jew considered Jewish , from the Orthodox Jew s perspective, considered Shomer Shabbat by the tenets of the Orthodox Jew, then the grain product could still receive a distinction of Pas Yisroel by the Orthodox Jew s preferred Hekhsher . Karpas is one of the traditional rituals in the Passover Seder . It refers to the vegetable, usually parsley or celery , that is dipped in liquid usually salt water and eaten. The liquid may be any of the seven which make food capable of becoming ritually impure , although salt water or vinegar are usually used. The idea behind the salt water is to symbolize the salty tears that the Jews shed in their slavery in Egypt . The general idea of dipping a vegetable into saltwater is to arouse the curiosity of the children, as per the theme of the Seder night that the story is to be recounted by way of question and answer. Such an action is not usually done, and thus arouses the curiosity of the children. ref Shulchan Aruch HaRav, Orach Chayim 273 14 ref Some have explained the dipping of the Karpas to symbolize Joseph Hebrew Bible Joseph s tunic being dipped into blood by his brothers. Karpas is therefore done at the beginning of the seder, just as Joseph s tunic being dipped into blood began the Israelites descent to Egypt. Indeed, the Brown Driver Briggs lexicon of Hebrew traces it to the Sanskrit word karp sa, meaning cotton.
