Image OSTA logo.png thumb The OSTA s website logo The Optical Storage Technology Association OSTA is an international trade association which promotes the use of recordable optical technologies and products, and most notably it is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the Universal Disk Format UDF specification. Representing more than 85 percent of worldwide writable optical product shipment s manufacturers and resellers, it was Incorporation business incorporated in 1992. In the autumn of 2007, OSTA spearheaded a campaign to encourage families and photographers to back up their digital photographs on compact discs. Since it is estimated that one out of seven computer hard drives crash within the first year Citation needed date August 2008 , OSTA believes it is dangerous to merely rely on storing irreplaceable pictures on a hard drive alone. Optical discs CD, DVD, BD , are an economical and reliable way to back up pictures and to make extra copies for greater protection and to share pictures with others. 1. Optical storage

Refimprove date December 2009 Optical storage is a term from engineering referring to the storage of data on an optically readable medium. Data is recorded by making marks in a pattern that can be read back with the aid of light , usually a beam of laser light precisely focused on a spinning disc. An older example, that does not require the use of computers, is microform . There are other means of optically storing data and new methods are in development. Optical storage differs from other computer data storage data storage techniques that make use of other technologies such as magnetism or semiconductor s. Optical storage can range from a single drive reading a single CD ROM to multiple drives reading multiple discs such as an optical jukebox . Single compact discs can hold around 700MB megabyte s and optical jukebox es can hold much more ref Compact Disc http en.wikipedia.org wiki Compact Disc ref . 1. Intel Rapid Storage Technology

Image RAID MATRIX.png thumb right Diagram of a Matrix RAID setup. Intel Rapid Storage Technology formerly Intel Matrix RAID is a firmware RAID system, rather than hardware RAID or software RAID. It first appeared in the I O Controller Hub ICH6 ICH6R Southbridge computing southbridge chip. Intel has continued to use an R at the end of the southbridge s name e.g. ICH9 R instead of ICH9 to indicate when a southbridge contains their Matrix RAID technology and no other upgrades. Complicating the matter is that instead of R, a DO, DH, etc has indicated a southbridge that combined RAID with non RAID related upgrades to the southbridge. Like all RAID, Intel Matrix RAID employs two or more physical hard disk s which the operating system will treat as a single disk, in order to increase redundancy which avoids data loss as all RAID levels except RAID 0 do , and or to increase the speed at which data is written to and or read from a disk. Intel Matrix RAID is not a new Standard RAID levels RAID level . One of the features that Intel Matrix RAID has, which many other RAID implementations lack, is that different areas e.g. partitions or logical volumes on the same disk can be assigned to different RAID devices. Currently in the I O Controller Hub ICH10 ICH10R Standard RAID levels RAID 0 RAID 0 , Standard RAID levels RAID 1 RAID 1 , RAID 10 RAID 10 RAID 1 0 RAID 10 , and Standard RAID levels RAID 5 RAID 5 are supported. The British Optical Association BOA was founded in 1895 as the first professional body for ophthalmic optician s optometrists in the world. It ran the first professional examinations in optics in 1896 and provided the Secretariat for a number of other optical bodies including what would eventually become the Association of Optometrists and the World Council of Optometry. In 1980, the BOA joined forces with the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers and the Scottish Association of Opticians now disbanded to found the British College of Ophthalmic Opticians, known since 1996 as The College of Optometrists . The BOA published the Dioptric Review and the British Journal of Physiological Optics on its own in house printing press. It administered several higher qualifications including the Diploma in Contact Lens Practice and awarded the BOA Research Medal. Fellows of the British Optical Association were entitled to use the affix FBOA. British Optical Association Museum The British Optical Association Museum was founded in London by John H. Sutcliffe OBE in 1901 as a collection of historic spectacles and visual aids designed to illustrate the development of corrective eyewear. It subsequently expanded its collecting activities to encompass ophthalmic instrumentation and the depiction of optometric subject matter in works of art such as paintings, prints and sculpture. With over 16,000 catalogued objects including archives it may be judged one of the most comprehensive and high quality collections of its type. It is believed to be the oldest such museum to be open to the public. Many of its objects are rare survivals and several are unique. The museum is located at the College of Optometrists at the north end of Craven Street, adjacent to Charing Cross railway station in City of Westminster Westminster .
