The Budapest OpenAccess Initiative BOAI was a conference convened by the Open Society Institute on December 1 2, 2001. This small gathering of individuals is recognised as one of the major historical, and defining, events of the Openaccess publishing openaccess movement. The opening sentence of the Budapest OpenAccess Initiative encapsulates what the openaccess movement is all about, and what its potential is An old tradition and a new technology have converged to make possible an unprecedented public good. The old tradition is academic scholars giving away the results of their research. Faculty at universities are paid by universities and or funding agencies to produce research disseminating the results in peer review ed venues is an expectation. Journals do not buy the articles from the authors or pay royalties on sales. The new technology is the Internet . Together, these have made it possible from everyone in the world to share knowledge freely and openly. The 13 original signatories of the Budapest OpenAccess Initiative included some of the world s early leaders in the openaccess movement Leslie Chan of Bioline International Darius Cuplinskas , Melissa Hagemann , Rima Kupryte and Istv n R v of Open Society Institute Michael Eisen of the Public Library of Science Fred Friend of the University College London Yana Genova of Next Page Foundation Jean Claude Gu don of the Universit de Montr al and Open Society Institute Stevan Harnad of the University of Southampton Universit du Qu bec Montr al Rick Johnson of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition ..., respectively. ref http www.soros.org openaccess view.cfm Budapest OpenAccess Initiative ... openaccess Budapest OpenAccess Initiative http www.earlham.edu peters fos boaifaq.htm Budapest OpenAccess Initiative FAQ http www.earlham.edu peters fos fosblog.html OpenAccess News by Peter ... Delayed openaccess journals are traditional subscription based scientific journal journals that provide openaccess publishing openaccess or free access upon the elapse of an embargo period following ... . A journal subscription or an individual article purchase fee would be required in order to access the materials before this embargo period ends. Some delayed openaccess journals also deposit their publications in Institutional repository open repositories when the author is bound by an immediate or delayed Openaccess mandate . Many scholarly society journals have adopted the delayed access model. While this increases access to scholarly research literature for many, libraries that do continue subscriptions under this model end up paying for access to a rolling file of the most recent material during its embargo period. The wide range in embargo lengths and the fact that openaccess publishing openaccess is both defined and intended as the state of immediate access limits the meaningfulness of classifying journals as delayed openaccess journals. Broadband openaccess is an issue of policy debate in telecommunications , regarding whether or not companies which own broadband telecommunication infrastructure such as cable operators should be required to provide access to their facilities for competing businesses which do not own physical infrastructure. The issue came to the fore in United States the U.S. in 1998, when AT&T announced its plan to acquire TCI , then the nation s largest cable operator. It involved municipal and local governments, the courts, Federal Communications Commission the FCC , Congress, businesses, industry association s, consumer advocacy groups , and many others. Similar issues arose in other countries such as the Netherlands , Hungary , and Canada . An openaccess poll is a type of opinion poll in which participants are self selection self selected . The term includes call in, mail in, and some online polls. tocright The most common examples of openaccess polls ask people to phone a number, click a voting option on a website , or return a coupon cut from a newspaper . By contrast, professional polling companies use a variety of techniques to attempt to ensure that the polls they conduct are representative, reliable and scientific. The most glaring difference between an openaccess poll and a legitimate poll is that openaccess polls have self selected participants, while scientific polls typically randomly select their samples occasionally on the street or at the door, but much more commonly by telephone or on the internet and weight them to make them representative. See Opinion Poll for more information. Advantages Since participants in an openaccess poll are volunteers rather than a random sample , such polls represent the most interested individuals, just as in voting. In the case of political polls, such participants might be more likely voters, and elections are won by those that show up. Disadvantages Due to selection bias , openaccess polls may not have participants that represent the larger population. As a consequence, the results of the poll cannot be generalized, but are only valid for the participants of the poll. Online poll An online poll is a survey in which participants communicate responses via the Internet, typically by completing a questionnaire in a web page. Online polls may allow anyone to participate, or they may be restricted to a sample drawn from a larger panel. The use of online panels has become increasingly popular and is now the single biggest research method in Australia. ref cite web url http www.amsrs.com.au index.cfm?a detail&eid 142&id 2672 title Push for online poll arises opinions ... networking DEFAULTSORT OpenAccess Poll Category Types of polling Category Article Feedback 5 ... more details

The Social Science OpenAccess Repository SSOAR is a database specialising in scholarly articles from the social sciences which is freely accessible on the Internet. SSOAR is a full text server, and Internet users can access full text versions of documents free of charge and without prior registration. The Repository publishing repository follows the so called Green Road , a strategy for the implementation of Openaccess publishing OpenAccess whereby preprint preprints or postprint postprints of scholarly contributions are archived in an openly accessible repository in addition to being published in toll access journals etc. Because the project is coordinated by an editorial team and is supported by an advisory board made up of members of scholarly societies, the quality of the contributions is assured. Moreover, SSOAR offers authors the opportunity to self archive their texts, to make them freely accessible and, by so doing, to increase the visibility and reach of their work. The project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft German Research Foundation DFG .
