African immigrants to LatinAmerica include Citizenship citizens and residents of countries in LatinAmerica who were born in, or with recent ancestors from Africa . History During the Portuguese Colonial War and Angolan Civil War Angolan and Mozambican Civil War s, a large number of Angola ns and Mozambicans including white Africans white Angolans and Mozambicans of Portuguese Africans Portuguese descent fled to Brazil also a former Portuguese colony, as Portugal was also a major destination for refugees and became citizens. After the end of both wars, most migration across the Atlantic to LatinAmerica was from West Africa , often due to political and socioeconomic instability, and a trend toward the tightening of border security in the European Union in the 1990s and first decade of the 21st century. The process of settlement and citizenship acquisition, however, has been eased for these immigrants due to the presence of pre existing Black diaspora populations in such countries as Brazil, which has minimized local trends towards xenophobia or colorism . ref http www.reuters.com article idUSTRE5AF0AG20091116 African immigrants drift toward LatinAmerica , Reuters ref By country Argentina 3000 African immigrants Brazil at least 3000 4000 African immigrants including 2000 immigrants from Nigeria References reflist Immigration from Africa Category Immigration by continent Category LatinAmerica Category African diaspora Category Immigration to North America Category Immigration to South America ... more details
League of Nations Category LatinAmerica history stub ...mergeto League of Nations date January 2012 Nine Latin American nations became charter members of the League of Nations when it was founded in 1919. The number grew to fifteen states by the time the first League Assembly met in 1920 and later, several others joined in the decade that followed. Although only Brazil had any participation in World War I and a minor role at that , these nations supported the idealistic principles of the League and felt it offered some measure of juridical protection from the interventionist policies of the United States in the period between the Spanish American War 1898 and the proclamation of the non interventionist Good Neighbor Policy by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. Latin American nations also felt that being members of the League would bring prestige and notoriety to LatinAmerica. All twenty Latin American countries were members of the League at one point, yet they were never all members at the same time. To guarantee Latin American representatives in the Assembly and Council, an unofficial bloc was established early on. This movement, in turn led to the creation of a special Latin American Liaison Bureau. Latin American delegates emphasized their contributions and hopes for world peace which eventually would anticipate their actions in the United Nations . The Latin American nations became increasingly disillusioned with the League in the 1920s. This was partly due to the failure of the United States to join the League, and partly because the major powers in the League paid little attention to LatinAmerica s problems. The League did have some role in two conflicts in South America in the 1930s The Leticia dispute between Colombia and Peru, and the Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay. References Atkins, G. The Great Depression which followed the Wall Street Crash of 1929 US stock market crash of 1929 badly affected the countries of Latin America . Before the global Great Depression of the 1930s, links between the United States economy and Latin America n economies had been established through US investment in Latin America and Latin American exports to the US. As a result, Latin Americans felt heavy reverberations when the US market crashed in 1929. Chile , Peru , and Bolivia were, according to a League of Nations report, the countries worst hit by the Great Depression. The rise of fascism also became apparent in Latin American countries in the 1930s due to the Great Depression. In particular, Get lio Vargas of Brazil was a staunch supporter of the fascist movement and imitated the Italian government. Fascist governments were the result of a desire for nationalism, which rulers like Vargas played on through propaganda. The Great Depression also led to the beginning of the industrialization process in Brazil, as the country needed an economic alternative to the highly devalued coffee , Brazil s main commodity at the time. The Get lio Vargas Vargas government started to purchase and burn coffee from the farmers, in order to avoid their complete bankruptcy.
