  1. Op. cit.

Op. cit. is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase opus citatum est , meaning the work has been cited . It is used in an endnote or footnote to refer the reader to the name of the work, publication or book referenced in the footnote, whilst avoiding the need to restate the full title of the work in the footnote itself. Op. cit. thus refers the reader to the bibliography , where the full citation of the work can be found, or to a full citation given in a previous footnote. Op. cit. should never therefore be used on its own, which would be meaningless, but must give a brief clue as to which work is referred to, for example Smith op. cit refers the reader to a work by Smith in the bibliography. Initials are not needed as the whole purpose of using op. cit. is economy of text. Where however two different works by Smith, or two different authors called Smith are included in the bibliography, the standard means of differentiation is to add the date of the work referred to in brackets, for example Smith 1871 op. cit. Op. cit. should strictly always be printed in italics, being a foreign word or phrase. Op. cit should be contrasted with Ibid. ibid , being an abbreviation of the Latin adverb ibidem , meaning in the same place, in that very place ref Cassell s Latin Dictionary, ed. Marchant & Charles, 260th. thousand ref which refers the reader to the preceding footnote and its own cited source. The Latin definitive pronoun idem meaning the same is also used on occasion within footnotes, which is taken to denote that the current footnote contains identical text to that preceding it. The Latin ... meaning in the place cited , but is now rarely used. Example Footnotes 9 11 9 R. Millan, Art of Latin ..., 2000 , p. 17. 11 Millan, op. cit., p. 5. 1. This Is Not Art

File TINA.jpg 300px thumb The graffiti that inspired the name of the TINA festivals This Is Not Art is a national festival of new media and arts organised in Newcastle, New South Wales , Australia each year over the October long weekend. Since its humble beginnings in 1998, it has become one of the leading arts festivals in Australia dedicated to the work and ideas of communities not included in other major Australian arts festivals. The program includes the festivals Electrofringe , the National Young Writers Festival , Critical Animals , Sound Summit the Crack Theatre Festival and other projects. Naming This Is Not Art takes its name from a prominent piece of graffiti on what was Newcastle s tallest building, Latec House now completely refurbished and converted to apartments , which had been derelict for several decades. The name also refers to the content of the event, which is outside the ambit of traditional Australian arts festivals. History This Is Not Art evolved from the National Young Writers Festival and National Student Media Conference which were established in Newcastle in September 1998. In 1999, The National Young Writers Festival combined with the Electrofringe Festival which had previously been an independently organised part of the now defunct Newcastle Fringe Festival and moved to the October long weekend.
