Onyx was a common term in a certain area of the United States, namely the TAG area and the Ozarks during the 19th and early 20th century. It was used for certain kinds of calcite speleothem s which are banded, similar to true onyx . The calcite concentrations in cave s are banded as they are deposited very slowly, layer by layer. The color depends on the climate outside, which changes continually, and the amount of pigments like iron oxide brought in by the water. So they have typically brown, beige, white and transparent banding. Much rarer are other colors like blue and green, which are typically based on copper oxides. The true onyx is also banded, and looks very similar. The main difference is onyx is composed of quartz , cave onyx is composed of calcite . It is easy to determine the difference with a knife it is possible to scratch calcite but not quartz, several acids show a reaction with calcite but not with quartz. The Onyx River is one of the many sites studied by the United States Antarctic Program of the National Science Foundation . The river flow is away from the ocean as the Wright Glacier blocks the entrance to the valley. It is the largest river in Antarctica, and at convert 25 mi km in length, it is also the longest. It has several tributaries, and there are multiple meteorological stations along the length of the river. Flow levels are highly variable, both during the day and between summers, with the river failing to reach the lake some years. In contrast, it can cause significant erosion in flood years, and was rafted in 1984 by New Zealand researchers. While there are no fish in Onyx River, it does support microorganism microscopic life , and the algal bloom s can be quite extensive. The Antarctica New Zealand program once maintained a semi permanent camp at Lake Vanda which has since been removed. Currently there is a small Research shelter at Lake Vanda at its eastern end. Nearby is the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Seismic station at Bull Pass. Onyx on the Bay is the name given to the tallest building in the Onyx on the Bay Complex in Miami , Florida , United States . Located in northern Midtown Miami , the tower was completed in 2007. It is 27 floors and 308 feet 94 m tall. The building is located on Northeast 25th Street between Biscayne Avenue and the oceanfont. It is a development of BAP GGM development. Its counterpart, Onyx 2 on the Bay, was a planned residential tower but was later canceled. It was supposed to be 49 floors and 543 feet 166 m tall when completed.
