  1. Vainglory (Old English poem)

Vainglory is the title given to an Old English gnomic or homiletic poem of eighty four lines, preserved in the Exeter Book . The precise date of composition is unknown, but the fact of its preservation in a late tenth century manuscript gives us an approximate terminus ante quem . The poem is structured around a comparison of two basic opposites of human conduct on the one hand, the proud man, who is the devil s child, enwreathed in flesh bi feondes bearn fl sce bifongen , and, on the other hand, the virtuous man, characterised as God s own son godes agen bearn . 1. Muffed Old English Game

More footnotes date January 2009 Image Muffed olde english game hen.jpg right thumb Muffed Old English Game Hen The Muffed Old English Game fowl is a direct descendant of the jungle fowl Gallus bankiva or red jungle fowl, imported into England during the spice trade era of early European navigation. These imported fowl were the originators of many breeds and the Muffed Old English Game fowl is probably one of the earliest of these varieties. Its color is variable, it does not have a great deal of set definitions and is not standardized by the American Poultry Association . As it is such an old breed, many local varieties have developed across the globe. There are English versions, Latin versions and American versions which may not locally fit with any definite groups of poultry and may therefore be regarded simply as chickens. Characteristics The characteristic which most distinguishes this breed from others is that its cheeks are muffed or bearded, making it a most handsome bird. It is very hardy, possibly owing to its jungle fowl heritage, and noted for being thrifty it broods eggs wonderfully, is able to care for itself in the most primitive conditions by eating insects, grasses, weed seeds and worms, whilst all the while raising a brood of chicks in a most protective manner. Coloration is similar to the Kraienk ppe or Twentse breed, as all the jungle fowl displayed colorful shades of red with silver duckwing plumage. 1. Old English Black

Refimprove date August 2011 File EnglishBlack.jpg thumb Old English Black Old English Black also known as Lincolnshire Black is an extinct horse breed . During the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066, the conquerors took some of the Great Horses from Europe across the English Channel and crossed them on native mares. Eventually, a distinct type evolved that was known as the Old English Black Horse. Despite the name, the breed had not been a color breed . For a long period of time, bay horse bays and browns were more commonplace than black horse blacks . There were also roan horse roans , gray horse grays , and chestnut coat chestnuts among them. The color horse markings markings were not unlike those of Clydesdale horses, with the desired pattern being four white stocking and a well defined bald face. Large Dutch horses possibly of Belgian horse Brabant and Friesian horse Friesian descent were imported by William III of England William III when he discovered that the cart horses of his era were not strong enough for the task of draining the Lincolnshire Fens. These horses became known as the Lincolnshire Blacks. ref name Wortley543 harvnb Wortley 2008 p 543 ref Eventually, the Old English Black Horse became extinct as a distinct breed and its bloodlines merged into other breeds. According to Hall and Clutton Brock, Robert Bakewell developed the Old English Black Horse into the Black Horse of Leicestershire, a forerunner of the Shire Horse of the Midlands. The Old English Black Horse heavily influenced the bloodlines of the Clydesdale horse Clydesdale and Shire horse Shire , and these breeds today have many features inherited from their ancestors. Mostly concentrated around Yorkshire and Lancashire , it was named and a breed club was formed in 1914. They are thought by some to be one of the precursors to today s Hamburg chicken Hamburgs . They have rose type Comb anatomy combs and white earlobes. Their plumage is a mahogany hue with darker lacing around the edges. It is a hardy bird that does well in free range conditions as a table bird and a layer of white eggs. In the 21st century, Old English Pheasant Fowl are extremely rare, even in their own country. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust of the U.K. listed them as endangered in their 2008 watch list.
