After David had subdued all their allies in a great war, he sent Joab with a strong force to take their city. For two years it held out against its assailants. It was while his army was engaged in this protracted siege that David was guilty of that deed of shame which left a blot on his character and cast a gloom over the rest of his life. Rabbinical Literature Ruth Rabbah Hebrew is an haggadic and homiletic interpretation of the Book of Ruth , which, like that of the four other scrolls megillot , is included in the Midrash Rabbot . This midrash, divided into eight chapters or sections parashiyyot , covers the whole text of the Biblical book, interpreting it verse by verse, now in its literal, now in an allegorical, sense. The first chapter terminates with Ruth i. 2 the second, with i. 17 the third, with i. 21 the fourth, with ii. 9 the fifth, with iii. 7 the sixth, with iii. 13 the seventh, with iv. 15 and the eighth, comprising only two verses, with iv. 19, verses 16 and 17 of ch. iv. being omitted. Rabbinical Literature Esther Rabbah Hebrew is the midrash to the Book of Esther in the current Midrash editions. From its plan and scope it is apparently an incomplete collection from the rich haggadic material furnished by the comments on the scroll of Esther, which has been read since early times at the public service on Purim . Structure of the Midrash Except in the Wilna and Warsaw editions with their modern and arbitrary divisions, this Midrash consists of six parashiyyot chapters, sections singular parashah introduced by one or more proems these chapters begin respectively at Esth. i. 1, i. 4, i. 9, i. 13, ii. 1, ii. 5 and in the Venice edition of 1545 each has at the end the words seli a parashata. . . . This division was probably based on the sections of the Esther roll, as indicated by the closed paragraphs such paragraphs existing in the present text to i. 9, i. 13, i. 16, ii. 1, ii. 5, etc. The beginning of i. 4, as well as the lack of a beginning to i. 16, may be due to differences in the division of the text. It may furthermore be assumed that a new parashah began with the section Esth. iii. 1, where several proems precede the comment of the Midrash. From ... is variously connected with these passages. Rabbinical Literature Ecclesiastes Rabbah or Kohelet Rabbah is an haggadic commentary on Ecclesiastes , included in the collection of the Midrash Rabbot . Eras of the Halakha Derekh Eretz Rabbah Hebrew is one of the minor tractates of the Talmud . In the editions of the latter the tractate Derek Ere consists of three divisions Derek Ere Rabbah Large Derek Ere Derek Ere Zu a Small Derek Ere Pere ha Shalom Section on Peace This division is correct in that there are really three different works, but the designations Rabbah and Zu a are misleading, since the divisions so designated are not longer and shorter divisions of one work, but are, in spite of their relationship, independent of each other. The ancient authorities, who have different designations for this treatise, know nothing of the division into Rabbah and Zu a the Halakot Gedolot ed. A. Hildesheimer , p.  647 even includes a large part of the Derek Ere Zu a under the title Rabbah. Summary of Contents According to the usual division, Derek Ere R. consists of 11 sections pera im . It begins with a halakic section on forbidden marriages arayot , to which are appended some ethical maxims on marriage. The second section consists of two entirely different parts, the first of which contains reflections on 24 classes of people 12 bad and 12 good with an appropriate Bible verse for each class the second enumerates the sins that bring about eclipses of the sun and moon, as well as other misfortunes, the whole ending with some mystic remarks concerning God and the 390 heavens. Rabbinical Literature Seder Olam Rabbah Hebrew , The Long Order of the World is a 2nd century CE Hebrew language chronology detailing the dates of biblical events from the Creation to Alexander the Great s conquest of Persia. It adds no stories beyond what is in the biblical text, and addresses such questions as the age of Isaac at the binding and the number of years that Joshua led the Israelites. Tradition considers it to have been written about 160 CE by Yose ben Halafta , which is not unreasonable, but it was probably also supplemented and edited at a later period Harv Strack Stemberger 1991 . In the Babylonian Talmud this chronicle is several times referred to simply as the Seder Olam Shab. 88a Yeb. 82b Nazir Talmud Nazir 5a Meg. 11b Ab. Rabbinical Literature Shir ha Shirim Rabbah Hebrew is a Haggadic midrash on Song of Songs Canticles , quoted by Rashi under the title Midrash Shir ha Shirim commentary on Cant. iv. 1, viii. 11 . It is called also Agadat azita , from its initial word azita Nathan ben Jehiel , in the Aruk, s.v. , or Midrash azita Na manides , commentary on Book of Exodus Ex. iv. 28 Simon Duran , Tashba , part iii., No. 37 . Origins Simon Duran , in quoting this midrash, says that it is a Judean haggadic collection ib. . This undoubtedly correct view is supported by a number of circumstances. The sources which it uses directly are from the Jerusalem Talmud . No direct borrowing from the Babylonian Talmud appears, and, although it contains many interpretations and comments found in this source, most of them vary greatly in form, the agreement being confined to their contents. This agreement, moreover, may be explained on the ground that the comments and interpretations in question are very old, and were included both in the Babylonian Talmud and in the Palestinian sources used by the redactor of the Shir ha Shirim midrash see below comp. also Theodar, Zur Composition der Agadischen Homilien, in Monatsschrift, 1879, p.  343 .
