Artist Descending a Staircase is Tom Stoppard s 1972 radio play that centers around a murder mystery involving an artist who dies from falling down a set of stairs ref http www.artscope.net PAREVIEWS ArtistDesc0501.shtml artscope.net ref . The play is a humorous exploration of the meaning and purpose of art. The title alludes to Marcel Duchamp s painting NudeDescending a Staircase, No. 2NudeDescending a Staircase . ref http theater.nytimes.com mem theater treview.html?res 950DEFDF1338F932A35751C1A96F948260 nytimes.com ref Plot The play opens with the sound of the artist, Donner, falling down the stairs. The other two roommates, Martello and Beauchamp, enter and find their 50 year old friend at the bottom of the staircase. Beauchamp, an artist whose focus is on the sounds of daily life, examines a recording of the sounds of Donner s fall. The pair decides that a murderer must have awakened Donner from his sleep and then pushed him down the stairs to his death. Martello and Beauchamp accuse each other of the crime. The following scenes flash back to several different years at least 50 years in the past. This part of the play follows the three artists and their interactions with a blind woman named Sophie. The end of the play returns to the present. Martello and Beauchamp are unable to solve the mystery, but Stoppard alerts the audience to the truth. When the audience witnesses a fly buzzing around the studio and Beauchamp s attempts to swat it, they realize that Donner must have fallen down the stairs in pursuit of the fly. The play ends with Beauchamp recording over the sounds of Donner s death. Theatrical Production A stage adaptation, written by Stoppard, was first performed at the R.J. Artwork image file Ascending and Descending.jpg image size 275px title Ascending and Descending artist M. C. Escher year 1960 type Lithography lithograph height 35.5 width 28.5 Italic title Ascending and Descending is a Lithography lithograph print by the Netherlands Dutch artist M. C. Escher which was first printed in March 1960. The original print measures 14 x 11 1 4 . The lithograph depicts a large building roofed by a never ending staircase . Two lines of identically dressed men appear on the staircase, one line ascending whilst the other descends. Two figures sit apart from the people on the endless staircase one in a secluded courtyard, the other on a lower set of stairs. While most two dimensional artists use relative proportions to create an illusion of depth, Escher here and elsewhere uses conflicting proportions to create the visual paradox. Ascending and Descending was influenced by, and is an artistic implementation of, the Penrose stairs , an impossible object Lionel Penrose had first published his concept in the February, 1958 issue of the British Journal of Psychology . Escher developed the theme further in his print Waterfall M. C. Escher Waterfall , which appeared in 1961. The two concentric processions on the stairs use enough people to emphasise the lack of vertical rise and fall. In addition, the shortness of the tunics worn by the people makes it clear that some are stepping up and some are stepping down. The structure is embedded in human activity. By showing an unaccountable ritual of what Escher calls an unknown sect, Escher has added an air of mystery to the people who ascend and descend the stairs. Therefore, the stairs themselves tend to become incorporated into that mysterious appearance. There are free people and Escher said of these recalcitrant individuals refuse, for the time being, to take part in the exercise of treading the stairs. They have ... 0 8109 6720 0. M. C. At the lower end of the kidney it turns medialward toward the lateral border of the Psoas major muscle psoas muscle, and then descends, in the angle between psoas and quadratus lumborum , to the crest of the ileum, where it ends in the sigmoid colon . The peritoneum covers its anterior surface and sides, and therefore the descending colon is described as retroperitoneal. Its posterior surface is connected by areolar tissue with the lower and lateral part of the left kidney, the aponeurotic origin of the transversus abdominis , and the quadratus lumborum. A Methodist, Lizzy is an outcast in the school who can t comprehend the dedication to Catholicism. She thinks the nuns who pray to Saint Joseph for help to finish their choir loft which doesn t have a staircase are crazy. She befriends an unemployed carpenter and suggests he build the staircase. Her classmates are furious as they were waiting for a miracle to occur. The carpenter, named Jose, proceeds to build the staircase in a matter of weeks armed with three simple tools and his faith. After building the staircase, Jose disappears and Lizzy decides to leave the convent to search for her father. This story is based on the real legend of the miracle occurring at the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, where an unnamed man thought to be Saint Joseph built a staircase. The circular staircase made two complete revolutions lacking both nails and a center support.
