About the safety capsule the podcast Escape Pod podcast Unreferenced date December 2009 An escape pod is a capsule or craft used to escape a vessel in an emergency, usually only big enough for one person. An escape ship is a larger, more complete craft also used for the same purpose. Escape pods are ubiquitous in science fiction , and infrequently used in real vehicles such as supersonic aircraft. Non fiction Because they were intended to fly too high or too fast for safe use of conventional ejection seat s, the B 58 Hustler , XB 70 Valkyrie , General Dynamics F 111 and B 1 Lancer B 1A Lancer all used enclosed escape crew capsule s of some kind. Although not designed or intended as one, Apollo 13 used the Apollo Lunar Module Lunar Module LM as a lifeboat when the service module suffered an explosion causing the command module to have to be shut down. The three man crew lived for an extended period in the two man LM and even used the LM s engine to realign the trajectory of the entire vehicle. The crew exited the LM Lifeboat shortly before re entry, jettisoning it and using up the last power and O sub 2 sub in the command module that they had saved by using the LM. The single Soviet Union Soviet Soviet submarine K 278 Komsomolets Mike class submarine had an escape capsule, which was jettisoned upon its sinking in 1989. Some Soviet submarines like the Oscar class submarine Oscar class are rumoured to have escape capsules for the crew. In the sinking of the Russian submarine K 141 Kursk Kursk the crew was unable to reach the capsule . 1. Escape reflex

Unreferenced date December 2009 Escape reflex , a kind of escape response , is a simple reflectory reaction in response to stimulus physiology stimuli indicative of danger, that initiates an escape motion of an animal . Escape reflexes control the seemingly chaotic motion of a cockroach running from under the foot when one tries to squash it. In higher animals examples of escape reflex include the withdrawal reflex , e.g., the withdrawal of a hand in response to a pain stimulus. Sensory receptor s in the stimulated body part send signals to the spinal cord along a sensory neuron . Within the spine a reflex arc switches the signals straight back to the muscles of the arm effector s via an intermediate neuron interneuron and then a motor neuron the muscle contracts and the arm jerks. Only three nerve cells are involved, and the brain is only aware of the response after it has taken place. Escape reflex arcs have a high survival value, enabling organisms to take rapid action to avoid potential danger. Various animals may have specialized escape reflex circuits. Examples of escape reflexes Withdrawal reflexes Ducking flexing the neck to protect the head Jumping at loud sounds Withdrawal of a body part when it touches something excessively hot or cold. 1. Hydrodynamic escape

Hydrodynamic escape refers to a thermal atmospheric escape mechanism that can lead to the escape of heavier atoms of a planet ary Celestial body atmosphere atmosphere through numerous collisions with lighter atoms. The classical thermal escape mechanism is when individual molecule s from the long tail high velocity tail of the Maxwell Boltzmann distribution reaches the escape velocity and overcome the gravity field. This is known as Jeans escape and depend on the temperature of the planet s exosphere and the strength of its gravity field. 1. Escape analysis

Unreferenced date December 2009 In programming language compiler optimization theory, escape analysis is a method for determining the dynamic scope of pointer computer programming pointer s. It is related to pointer analysis and shape analysis software shape analysis . When a variable or an object is allocated in a subroutine , a pointer computer programming pointer to the variable can escape to other Thread computer science thread s of execution, or to calling subroutines. If a subroutine allocates an object and returns a pointer to it, the object can be accessed from undetermined places in the program &mdash the pointer has escaped . Pointers can also escape if they are stored in global variables or other data structures that, in turn, escape the current procedure. Escape analysis determines all the places where a pointer can be stored and whether the lifetime of the pointer can be proven to be restricted only to the current procedure and or thread. 1. Escape tunnel

Refimprove date March 2008 An escape tunnel is a form of secret passage used as part of an escape from siege or captivity. In medieval times such tunnel s are usually constructed by the builders of castle s or palace s who wish to have an escape route if their domain is under attack. In the case of prisoners, escape tunnels are dug to be free of captivity. In road and rail tunnels, narrower escape tunnels are provided to enable people to escape on foot in the event of a fire or other accident in the main tunnel. For example, between the two main bores of the Channel Tunnel is an access tunnel large enough to take a fire engine. Medieval escape tunnels Throughout the British Isles and much of northern Europe escape tunnels were often part of the intrinsic design of fortified houses and palaces. The tunnel would typically be one half to two kilometers long and open in a location not readily visible to attackers. Examples of these tunnels are at Muchalls Castle Scotland and the Bishops Palace at Exeter England .
