Primarysources date December 2007 NewTown Primary School abbreviation NTPS zh s is a government co education al, primary school in Queenstown, Singapore Queenstown , Singapore . It was situated at the junction of Commonwealth Drive and Commonwealth Avenue. In 2009 , NewTown Primary School moved to 300 Tanglin Halt Road after the merger with Ghim Moh Primary School . History NewTown Primary School got its name because it was situated in this newtown where high rise, low cost Housing Development Board HDB flats were built. It was officially opened on 26th July 1965 by the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, then Minister of Finance. This made NewTown Primary School as old as the Republic of Singapore, which gained her independence on the 9th of August 1965. The old campus of NewTown Primary School was then located at the junction of Commonwealth Drive and Commonwealth Avenue in Queenstown. The school building was a 4 storey block with 24 classrooms. Most of the students lived in HDB flats around Queenstown. At that time, NewTown Primary School was an Integrated School, offering both English medium and Chinese medium classes in two sessions, having both morning and afternoon sessions. In 1983, NewTown Primary School became totally English Medium. It went through two mergers with other primary schools around Queenstown. In 1992, it merged with Permaisura and Farrer Primary Schools. With the merger, NewTown Primary School took over the building of Permaisura Primary School which was right next to its old campus. On 2nd January 2004 , NewTown Primary School became single session, only having a morning session. In January 2009, NewTown Primary School merged with Ghim Moh Primary School and was relocated to a new campus at 300, Tanglin Halt Road. After Mrs Lily Ong retired, Mdm Irene Eng took over as School Principal in 2011.
